Dom Pedro II Bonded Escape Story From Rio De Janeiro
An 1831 revolt forced Dom Pedro I to abdicate, and the future Dom Pedro II hid in a Brazilian house. Captain Thomas Dunbar of Stonington aided his escape by transporting him aboard a cargo ship after carts of ship biscuits were wheeled to the vessel. The emperor reached Stonington unrecognized and later returned to Europe. Dunbar was paid 200 dollars and later recalled the tale before dying at his son-in-law’s house in Westerly, Rhode Island.
