Crystal finding in the Swiss Alps yields large quartz veins

In the Swiss Alps the rock crystal finding trade tests nerve and endurance as lone strahjer searchers crawl perilous paths for quartz veins. A Berne apothecary and a guide ascended to a 60 foot long vein near St. Gotthard, mining it to extract 300 ett of crystals for science and industry.

Great bells cast for town hall and clock at Crystal Palace

A seven foot five inch bell weighing about seven tons was cast at Loughborough for the new town hall, with a fine full note of six and nine. The bell, destined for Millichester, will be hung in the Tower lanterns. A monster clock by E Dent & Co of the Strand and the Exchange, smaller than Westminster’s but with a 20 foot dial, has been completed at Crystal Palace after six months of work. The minute hand is 1.5 feet long and moves 0.5 inches per beat, with a weekly arc of nearly four miles and only eight seconds of variation in 17 days of observation.
