Cox requested a full probe after learning of inquiries.
The House committee on banking and currency voted six to four to report a bill repealing the resumption clause of the 1874 specie resumption act. They also favor reporting a joint resolution for appointing a three House and three Senate member convention with experts to study the silver question and recovery of specie payments.
The House Judiciary Committee backs a Blaine proposal to amend the Constitution. It declares that no state may establish religion or prohibit free exercise, nor fund public schools or land for religious use, with funds or lands not to be divided among sects.
At Pandsilo three Turkish battalions and 500 Gircassians crossed into Servia. Gen Horvatovteh feigned a retreat to lure the Turks who occupied a village. On Tuesday Servians attacked and massacred the entire Turkish detachment.
Telegrams report Goldsmith Maid won three heats at the Buffalo race and set a fastest time on record. Also notes a heavy gale offshore of Scotland and northern England causing casualties. Government to sell the Alabama award on the 11th inst. with about two million dollars.
A. B. Wood and W. H. Stevens report a large carbonate of lead discovery in Oro district near California Gulch. The vein runs 14 to 16 feet thick with 4,000 feet opened and ore commonly at least 10 feet thick. Assays average about 9 percent lead and 15 ounces of silver per ton, with traces of gold.
