The Skeet elevator, also called Skip by miners, is a square water light box of wrought iron designed to replace cages and cars for hoisting ore and lowering workers. It lifts nearly five tons of rock or eight load units per trip, dumps contents from the surface, rights itself automatically, and matches conventional cage weight when empty. Isaac L. Requa introduced the concept at Challar Norcross Savage shaft. Yellow Jacket’s new shaft will be the second Comstock installation of this labor-saving contrivance.
