Sedalia Missouri May 27 Dr E F Staats arrested charged with failure to report smallpox to the Board of Health. For months the city has had smallpox with many patients never quarantined. The mayor ordered strict quarantine. Staats claimed neighbors misidentified a case as swallipox when it was measles. City physicians investigated and the arrest followed.
Atlanta May 27 A millionaire dubbed Gourdale once of Chicago and New Orleans now serves time in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary He arrived from Joliet under guard and was turned over to Atlanta officials His colorful career includes a 1906 Chicago conviction for lottery postal law violations and a long series of eccentric, self directed legal maneuvers
In New York on May 27 a riot broke out between about 500 longshoremen strikers and strike breakers at the Atlante Basin entrance in South Brooklyn. Shots were fired and police reserves fought to restore order. About 300 black strike breakers were halted at Hamilton Ferry by roughly 200 strikers trying to persuade them not to report to work.
