Missouri Twine Factory Run by Prison Labor in Jefferson City

The Ruralites describe Missouri’s binder twine factory operated by the state in the Jefferson City penitentiary. It uses prison labor to make high grade binding twine sold to farmers at 7 to 7.5 cents a pound in 1000 pound lots or smaller quantities delivered on board. The plant’s annual capacity and price influence help farmers save thousands annually, despite producing only about one twentieth of Missouri’s 25 million pounds annual need.

Feed costs and grain prices keep pork expensive, while some producers cut pig output to favor corn sales. Sheep offer lower grain needs, but pork hogs remain the main profit, as corn acreage is unlikely to rise enough to drop prices.
