Steamer Primus sinks after collision on Elbe
Hamburg July 21 The steamer Primus of the Hamburg American line with 185 aboard was cut in two by the Hansa and sank at 12 30 this morning on the Elbe. About 50 passengers reached the Hansa using ropes and ladders. Seventy were rescued by the tug's boat and some swam ashore with thirteen bodies recovered to date.

Burned at the Stake in Clayton Miss for Attempted Assault
William Ody, a Black man, was burned at a stake after attempting to assault Miss Virgie Tucker, daughter of a planter. Tucker, returning home in a buggy, was seized. she suffered two broken arms and a fractured skull before Ody fled. He was captured and executed that night by the planter’s son.
