Six month terms challenge school funding

By npt A L Ives. This week marks the close of all the six month terms of school. A few other schedules are clueing because of a shortage in money. Is it unfortunate for the children when she schools close at the time of the year. Certainly sufficient means should be provided to run the schools at least eight months during the year. This plan is just the opposite of what the people do to their individual affairs. They try to have as large a surplus as possible at the end of the year. Why should not a school district make provision for the proper maintenance of a liberal term of school, and have a few dollars left for an emergency? Too often the people vote a seven or an eight month term of school and fail to provide sufficient means to maintain it. Some schools have already closed this year for lack of money to run them. As a rule school boards do not provide means for the school library, apparatus, etc. Teachers have been raising money for this purpose with entertainments of various kinds. But supplementary and social have become quite popular, and teachers are to be highly commended for this work. It is estimated that at least 00 has already been valued this year by this means for library and apparatus. Several of our schools are supplied with a good working library of from 50 100 volumes, plenty of maps, a good globe, dictionary and blackboard. In all cases these additions to the school equipment have brought about increased interest in the school and the work. Cannot other districts do as well? There are still some districts almost devoid of the necessary school apparatus. Teachers can do a good work by getting the people and children interested in those things that make for better schools.
