Found in a Field A Wanderer Identified as James Jackson

Coroner Dr. L Callaway investigated a body found on H B Cresap’s farm near Schell City. The man, identified as James Jackson, a former New York merchant, died after a fall and exposure with no sign of struggle. His past life remains largely unknown. letters from New York were found in his trunk but offered little light. A postmortem suggested death by apoplexy or heart disease. relatives in New York are being sought.

City hall meeting on moving implement factory to town

A business meeting of city merchants discussed bringing a maker of farm implements from Illinois to relocate here. Messrs sicks and Hooper proposed a new company with $40,000 capital, with their firm subscribing $15,000. A committee including John Catterlin and others was named to confer with the proposers. The report also praised W H Adams of Butler for his early journalism work.

Adaptability of fruits to climate discussed at Bates County meeting

Henry Sweer argues orchardists in Bates County should select fruit varieties suited to the local climate. He notes many eastern varieties fail here and urges local horticultural societies to evaluate and recommend varieties. The Bates County Horticultural Society plans a march third Saturday meeting with a list of best apple varieties for family and commercial orchards, urging attendance and member involvement. Carnes and Hall advertise a large flax loan with seed and a flax cleaner, promoting Russian or native seed and high returns for farmers.
