In Pineville Kentucky on Tuesday night Judge Lewis of Harlan county, active leader of the Law and Order party in the Howard Turner feuds, was shot and killed by his 22-year-old son Sidney Lewis. The son, described as dangerous and loyal to his father in past conflicts, reportedly emptied a revolver at the judge in a barn on the homestead after a quarrel. The elder Lewis helped rout the Will Howard faction in previous feuds. Howard is now in Missouri prison, Jennings in prison for life, and the son faces a violent, grim fate as the community mourns the tragedy.
Gov. Francis says an extra session may be needed if the current Missouri assembly fails to redistrict the state. He expects an apportionment bill from Washington and stresses duty to redistrict for senatorial and congressional purposes before adjournment or else the governor and top state officials must act.
