Missouri State Bank advertises deposits subject to check and loans money while making collections and conducting a general banking business in the Real Estate Loan Department. It offers loans on real estate for long or short time at the lowest rates without delay. WM. E. Walton is cashier and J. R. Jenkins asst. cashier.
In St Louis on Feb 6 authorities report a major theft tied to the Pacific Express Company. A package valued at 35,000 dollars was traced from Dallas to St Louis, with 50,000 dollars remitted by City National Bank of Dallas. Suspect F A Dalton described. police pursue the missing greenbacks and gold.
A colored lawyer, C H J Taylor, reports a Kansas City Kansas counterman charged him $2 for coffee and pie due to color. He paid ten cents after noting a ten cent price, asserting Kansas bans color discrimination and predicting the case will challenge the restaurant’s rule. Also advertises Hibbard's Rheumatic Syrup claiming to cure rheumatism by restoring kidney and liver health. Sold by all druggists.
At Mrs. John Come’s funeral in Abilene Kansas, Catholics and Protestants clashed when the Episcopal rector began to pray. Mr Hines a Catholic leader disrupted the service, insulted attendees calling them heretics, and threatened to throw the body from the grave. A shovel in hand he drove Protestants from the cemetery before calm returned. The scene was described as disgraceful and chaotic.
Circuit court proceedings mix damages continuances and verdicts with a stark grand jury report charging the Bates county jail as a nuisance and disgrace. The jury condemns the jail while noting orderly offices, and cites various court actions, appraised properties, and county expenditures.
