Circuit Court opened Monday February 6 1911 with Judge C A Calvird on the bench and H O Maxey Circuit Clerk and Sheriff W J Bullock in attendance. Opening days were spent setting the docket and filing motions. Judge Calvird was surprised to receive a handsome applewood gavel left in his desk Monday evening.

Different centers ship labor with almost every train to Rockville and Rich Hill, keeping a constant labor quota. Workers receive 20 to 30 cents per hour and a village hotel and transient labor supply all kinds. From 15 to 25 men employed daily, vast quantities of high explosives used. The ditch is the state’s largest, reflecting persistent effort and bold ideas, reclaiming productive land and adding wealth to the commonwealth. X.
