Citizens Oppose Butler Telephone Franchise Ten-Year Plan

A citizens meeting in Butler rejected a twenty year proposed franchise for Butler Telephone Co. The report by the Commercial Club watchdog urged limited terms, modernized service, city supervision, reduced poles, free county connections, and detailed rate guarantees. Several opponents and hundreds of rural line patrons urged caution.

Farmers urged to hold back hog shipments in Chicago

Washington reports J. P. Cotton head of the meat division of the food administration appealed to farmers to delay deliveries as hogs arrive in Chicago faster than slaughter capacity. He reaffirmed the price floor of an average $15.50 per hundredweight for the present period.

German agents blamed for U S livery barn blaze in Huron

Fire at the McWeeny livery stable in Huron South Dakota destroyed an assembling place for horses for artillery and allied forces. Evidence reportedly points to German agents. Thirty five horses were killed and the total loss reached seven thousand dollars.

Bates County Exemption Board Begins Mailing Questionnaires

The Bates County Exemption Board started distributing five percent of draft questionnaires daily to complete the classification of all registrants. Recipients must answer fully within seven days or risk loss of favorable classification. An advisory board and attorneys assist registrants at no cost.

Judgment Against Bates County in U.S. Court

Wills & Sons sued Bates County in a Kansas City U.S. court over rock left in a drainage ditch. The contractor argued the contract did not require rock removal. the county billed $30,090 plus interest, and the jury ruled for Wills & Sons. The county may appeal.
