Bates Co Farmer Killed by Mule Team on Bedford Farm
Hugh Thomas, 42, of the Bedford farm two miles southwest of Adrian, was found dead Tuesday evening while plowing with young mules and a horse. His neck and back were broken, likely from the team moving after he lay over the double tree. Three young sons, ages 7, 9, and 11, witnessed the tragedy as neighbors and a coroner investigated. An autopsy confirmed back injuries. the jury ruled death from injuries inflicted by the team, possibly aggravated by the plow being out of adjustment. Thomas had recently buried his wife and child and left the three boys. Funeral services were held at the Dunkard church with Elder Geo. Lentz officiating. He left $5,000 life insurance.
