Three inmates attempted a bold escape at the state penitentiary in Jefferson City. A coal car carrying John Shead, William Stender, and Ora Lewis roared toward a wall gate, overturning after a crash. Guards captured Shead after subduing him. Stender fled, and Lewis, a St. Louis gunman, was seized earlier.
