Thousands of Sheep Die in Cold Snap

The Butra district suffers heavy losses from a cold snap with about 6,000 sheep dead along the Hallett to Farwell Flat line and a further 1,000 near Booborowie. Estimated total losses near £10,000 include stud rams, lambs, and fat store sheep, with some paddocked in stubble escaping.

Burra F Footballers Trophies Presented At Dance

The Burra football club held a ceremony at the RSL Rooms on Monday evening to present trophies won during the year. Mayor Marston awarded prizes including Fairest and Most Brilliant Matthews Emporium vs Mr R James, Most Consistent donated by Mr K J Murphy, Best Placed by Mr R Walker, Most Unselfish by Mr 4 C Davies, and Most Consistent Junior by Mr H B Pyke. The local captain Ken Kellaway lamented missing a game, and the team thanked officials E Weichs and others for arranging the event.

Burra Races Prepare for Strong Spring Meeting

Burra Racing Club lists 1, from the lot, accepting entries for tomorrow’s Spring Meeting. Committee reports a splendid course after improvements and a large turnout expected, weather permitting. The card features the Burra Handicap over a mile and a quarter and several races with noted contenders such as Maran Gem, Talk, Irish Lorrmer, and Prince Sakao among others.

Burra School Welfare Club meets in October gathering

The Burra School Welfare Club held its usual monthly meeting on Tuesday in October with Mrs Ped erick in charge due to Mrs Jennison's absence. Apologies were read from Mesdames Jennison and Woodards, and members discussed several matters. Mrs Ped erick thanked members, parents, judges, gate-keepers, and all helpers who contributed to the Pet Show's success. afternoon tea was served by Mrs Fuller and Mrs L White, with trading table supervised by Mrs C Latt. Proceeds for the afternoon were 13 shillings 8 pence.

Burra to Form a Platoon of 27th Scottish Light Horse

Burra hosts a public event to form a platoon of the 27th Scottish within the South Australian 21st Scottish Regiment. Lieut Campbell leads. two weekly parades and 14 days of annual training planned. age range 18 to 35. nucleus of 12 men needed, full platoon 36. Bridge Evening at St Chin Cent Church Raises Funds

A Church of England bridge evening at the Burtee Lounge featured seven bridge tables and four tables of other games. Prizes went to Mrs J Hogan and Mrs Miels with consolation to Mesdames DL Hawke and Stewart. Proceeds totaled £7 15s, donations praised for lounge use.

Burra Defence Corps Dinner Sees Growing Attendance

The Burra Platoon of the Volunteer Defence Corps held its annual dinner at Barratt's Royal Exchange Hotel in Burra North on Saturday night. Toast Master Mr F H Reed, who led during the war, oversaw numerous toasts as members enjoyed a sumptuous spread and lively celebration with more attendees than last year.
