Burra CMF Platoon to Start in July

Burra CMF Platoon will commence operations on July 15 and attach to the 27th Scottish B.A. Regiment. The unit aims to be fairly strong with twenty national trainees within a ten mile radius. Attendance at parades is compulsory for the first mentioned trainees, and all National Service Trainees must serve 26 days per year with five parades at the home base counting toward the total.

Hospital Board Approves New Midwifery Equipment Purchases

Skeleton of girl found with snake motif in 4000 B.C. grave

Czechoslovak archaeologists uncovered a girl’s skeleton in a 4000 B.C. grave in the Hradec Kralovo district. The grave contained a snake curled around the waist and two small stone knives along with ornate earrings reported by Rude Pravo.

Burra Air Force Association Meeting Notes and Plans

The Burra Air Force Association held its June meeting in the Club Rooms with fair attendance. Funds gained about £90 from a wool bale donated by G Warnes & Sons. An Annual Ball and a Kitty Kat Club Square Dance Set from Adelaide are planned for September 4 with Schwerdt's Band from Port Pirie providing music. The Association supports Hospital progress and will meet again July 10.

Wool Sales Top Prices At Adelaide Final Sale

At the eleventh and final Adelaide Wool Sale on June 16 H J C Collins Pulpara Terowie topped the state with 1234 and Radford Bros Canegrass at 110 for the district. About 47 000 bales were offered with strong Russian and continental buyer support though values fell about 10 percent from earlier sales. Local prices list various growers and stations with figures in pence per pound for fine and carpet wools.

Burra Coronation Committee Reports £94 Profit

The Burra Coronation Committee did not aim to profit from celebrations but the Mayor announced an accrued profit of £94. At the Burra Hospital Board meeting the Mayor gave £47 to the hospital, later topped to £50 by Mrs Andrew Tennant. The board expressed appreciation for the gifts. The remaining £47 will be raised to £50 by Mrs Tennant and given to the War Memorial Committee.

Design Wanted For Hospital Grounds

Plans call for a new garden and landscape layout for the hospital grounds with a prize of £5 5s 0d for the best sketch or plan. The design should include a tennis court and the tone indicates a forthcoming foundation stone ceremony for the new building.

Fire at Maurice Williams home draws large crowd

At 7 15 p m on a wet Thursday the local Fire Brigade answered a call to Maurice Williams residence on Cemetery Road. A fire started in the sitting room chimney. About 20 cars lined the street as residents gathered. Fire was quickly extinguished with buckets of water and only water damage to floor coverings reported.
