Empire Day Observed at Burra High and Primary Schools

Empire Day was celebrated at Burra High and Primary Schools with Mr Hawker MP and the Mayor addressing students. Speakers urged good citizenship, flag salute, and a National Anthem half holiday followed.

Richardson Leads Burra Handicap Eclectic Round With 71

I Richardson shot 71 on 18 holes to top the handicap stroke competition at Burra Golf Club linked to the Eclectic first round. Other scores included S McAuley 75 and L Thomas 87 with various handicaps. next Saturday features the final Eclectic round and a handicap stroke event with partner draws at 145 pin.

Two Nominations For Mayor In Burra Supplementary Election

On Saturday May 28 the Returning Officer Mr E R Davey announced two nominations for Burra Mayor F T Marston and Mrs Kellaway. Voting will be from 8 am to 6 pm. Cr F T Marston resigned from West Ward after being nominated. The council accepted the resignation.

Burra Rifle Club extends E C Collins stage amid windy shoot

At the Burra Rifle Club 23rd stage of the E C Collins trophy was fired over 500 and 600 yards. Jim Schwier leads with 29 points, Ron Kellock 26, Joe Lloyd 23, with a final shoot next Saturday to decide the season. Pat Hogan added four points to 49 in The Gap Trophy while Joe Lloyd leads the J R Barker trophy on 23. D Field won the best shot badge as weather damp and windy kept scores lower.

Badminton and Table Tennis Gather at Kooringa Hall

Every Monday night at Kooringa Methodist Hall members and friends play Badminton to stay active in cold weather. A Table Tennis Club formed to ensure enjoyable evenings with no limit to participants and matches planned against other clubs.

Pleasant Willalo welfare club meeting yields funds

On May 26 11 members of the Willalo School Welfare Club held a social afternoon with a trading table and afternoon tea. Proceeds totaled 12 shillings 8 pence and 12 shillings. The next meeting will be held shortly.

Talc and pottery clay deposits near Burra attract explorer Mawson

Sir Douglas Mawson visited Burra District to inspect local mineral deposits. He praised talc sample by Norman Ford as high quality and potentially as valuable as Pyrenees mines. Pottery clay also rated good. mayor to forward samples to the Department of Mines for possible official site inspections.

Burra CWA Holds May Meeting and Notes Donations

The Burra Branch of the CWA met Friday May 21 at 2 30 pm with Miss Rogers in the chair. Mrs Roy McWaters of Beaufort Victoria attended. Barker forwarded 368 lbs of fat to Adelaide aiding Britain soap efforts. A letter from Miss Burry of the Piddington WI England discussed their first birthday party.

Sunday School Reopens at St Marys with 31 Pupils

St Marys Church of England Sunday School reopened after years closed with 31 prospective pupils attending. Miss Nina Morrison organized demonstrations of Kindergarten work and discussed equipment including a Strip Film projector to be used for teaching at the Sunday School and local schools. Rev R B Potte t and Superintendent Mr N Woodards praised the reopening and expect weekly sessions each Sunday at 10 am.

Town Clerk Accepts Carpenter Tender for Hall Painting

The Town Clerk accepts W. Carpenter's tender to paint and lime the large Town Hall room, with completion planned by month end. A calendar form recipe book for hot and cold puddings is to be compiled, with each branch contributing recipes. Six members offer to contribute, while a planned play may be staged at the August meeting.
