Burra Town Council Rebuffs £1200 War Memorial Loan

At a ratepayers meeting Burra Council was told the Under Treasurer refused the £1200 loan for an oval at Victoria Park. Only £400 remains available under the scheme, while Council may borrow £3200 from the Savings Bank at 3 1/8 per cent or use £400 in bonds. The council will support committee spending and may avoid another ratepayers vote.

Hallett memorial committee forms for WWII enlistment roll

A public meeting in Hallett last August aimed to add the names of World War II enlistments to the town roll. A strong turnout supported the effort as W Miller chaired and Frank MacDonald Ben served as secretary. The committee, linked with sporting and public bodies, reported progress last Tuesday July 20, with plaques nearly ready for the Soldier’s Garden monument and plans for memorial gates at the park entrance. The panel was authorized to obtain gate prices and masonry work, promising a lasting tribute to the boys and a valued asset for Hallett and District.

A ratepayers meeting will decide leases for Aberdeen and Mootinga Methodist Tennis Clubs. The Burra Town Council granted a 99 year park lease, contrary to the Act which limits to 21 years with ratepayer consent by poll or meeting. Early Morning Arrests In Hogback Lane Larceny Case

Early daylight arrests were made by Mounted-Constables France and Welch in Hogback Lane about 30 miles east of Bury while suspects slept. Edward Carpenter and Raymond Edward Robinson faced larceny charges before Mr W H Gare, remanded on bail until July 30 1948. The cash bag and roughly £20 were recovered from the Truck Driver’s loss.

Burra's Oldest Citizen Annie Ford Dies at 89

Burra's oldest resident Miss Annie Ford died at her Chapel Street home on Sunday July 1 aged 89. Born April 6 in Basin Farm Burra she lived a long active life supporting charities and destitute children. Her funeral at Burra Cemetery Monday July 12 was led by Rev. Dorman with local pallbearers and funeral directors C. J. Pearce & Son.

Mr J Harris of J J Jennison's Tyre Service Station Commercial Street Burra suffered severe facial burns Thursday when a rag soaked in kerosene ignited inside a boiler after the door was opened during a drying prep. The explosion caused burns to his face. he is in Burra Hospital recovering.
