Miss Dorothy Hams was honored at a Leighton Hall party hosted by Mr and Mrs T Hams on Thursday July 1. The event featured cottage garden decorations, a three tier cake, toasts by B Jeffery, singing, and dancing to Darrell Field Orchestra ending with Auld Lang Syne.
Goldsbrough Mort & Co Limited reports a well attended Burra market with a large yarding of 2495 sheep and 2098 sold. Merino ewes and wethers fetched firm rates, with a standout 183 April 1947 drop ewes sold at 100/9. Cattle and gorse yarded and sundries included. next Burra Market slated for Friday 6 August.
The Burra Town Hall hosted the Annual Catholic Ball with Catherine Orchestra providing music. MCs K Murphy and P Hogan guided dances as a large crowd enjoyed the evening, followed by a sumptuous supper coordinated by R Aldridge and P Roberts with help from several committee members. Dancing continued until 1.90 am with floral decorations by Mrs J Hogan.
Members spent a busy afternoon on June 16 with Mrs A L Collins presiding in Mrs Hawker’s absence. The Food for Britain effort raised 24 13 10. 3 6 6 spent on more food and 1 7 4 set aside for postage. Seventeen parcels were sent to pensioners and war widows in England. New officers can be nominated at Maxted's store. The next meeting July 21 marks the branch’s second anniversary with tea, trading table, competitions, and a birthday party. The kangaroo skin is being tanned for the scrap book cover. Tea raised 18 5. trading table 16 3. competition 1 10 6.
At a Burra Burra Show Inc general committee meeting in the Eastern Telephone Buildings on Friday afternoon, Mr Robert E. Angel was named secretary for the next twelve months after applications followed the resignation of former Secretary H. M. Scott. The committee also left the disposal of the remaining portion of the Eastern Fence to the President A. B. Riggs and Vice President F. H. Reed.
The Burra High School Parents and Friends Association held its June meeting and decided to host a ball around mid September. A gift to the school named Morary, from a former student’s family, was presented. The next meeting on July 20 will be a plant and shrub afternoon to beautify the grounds, with proceeds of 16 shillings.
On Wednesday night June 30 Redruth Recreation Club faced G. Marys at St Marys Hall. Redruth won 11 sets to 7 after both doubles and singles. A supper was served by St Marys team and a return match will be held soon at Redruth Hall.
Burra achieved a record loan performance with a quota of £6,000 and contributed £13,240 overall. The town will receive a green pennant with two stars to honor the effort and its per capita share.
Federal Cabinet extended protections for ex-servicemen and dependants against eviction from homes from three to four years. Prime Minister Chiffsy stated the moratorium begins at discharge and may prevent forced losses of land under the Re establishment and Employment Act despite funding constraints.
