Gum Creek Clearing Sale Brimming With Demand

The Gum Creek sale on February 11 attracted record attendance from Orroroo to Mt Gambier as Mes P. & T. Canny moved to Mingenew. Bids were strong for cattle led by Jersey dairy cattle valued up to £50 10s top, with six yearling heifers at £20 each, and farming gear, horses, hay, and household effects selling well amid firm goat fleece wool demand compared with the last Adelaide Wool Sale.

Fire Damages Mt Bryan Wheat Stack

A fire at the Mt Bryan Wheat Stack began around 20 pm on Friday February 19 and was quickly controlled. Nearby railway workers and Mr G Maxted helped extinguish the blaze, with a charred wooden beam and damage estimated at about £10.

Hinkler's Log Found in Hampshire Aeroplane Club Barn

The Hampshire Aeroplane Club's managing director Mr Henry Stisted discovered Hinkler's log and the plane in a barn near Southampton after it was bought for £998 and nearly destroyed. The log's origin and the plane's past were clarified by the club official.

Bravery Award For Halting Train

Ashman, a 60 year old gardener, earned the British Empire Medal for stopping a speeding miniature train on the South coast. The driver was unconscious in his car as Ashman pulled a brake lever after climbing over two coaches, likely preventing derailment with around 100 passengers aboard, many children. The line, Britain's only non state run railway, ran two miles out of control before the action.

Mass Marriage Ceremony Unites Pushkarna Brahmins at Bikaneer

Seven hundred couples including four sisters marrying a man aged 40 partake in what is billed as Bilaneer's biggest mass wedding. The Pushkarna Brahmin sect, following a custom of mass ceremonies every four years, saw partners from New Delhi and 200 miles away join in a traditional rite. Those not wed today face waiting until 1867.

World Record Wool Price Set at Laureston Sale

A bale of extra superfine merino wool sold for 3 674 a lb at Laureston wool sales, believed to be a world record. The prior record was 45 440 for similar wool two years earlier. The record bale came from KR Taylor's Valleyfeld in Tasmania's midlands, following a 365d a lb sale from the same property.

Brisbane wool sale sets new top prices in fifth series

Brisbane record season tops greasy wool at 13544 and scoured at 1804 as the fifth Brisbane wool sale series opens. A total of 16 7166 lots offered were sold with prices firm against late Sydney rates. Compared with December Brisbane closes, values were marked 5 percent clearer.

Horses Stung By Bees On North Auckland Farm

On a North Auckland farm over the weekend two draught horses were trapped in their harness and stung by a swarm of bees. Farmer Robert Harding and his 16 year old son attempted to free them but each horse received about 1500 to 1900 stings before the bees were driven off with smoke. The animals could not drink and developed swollen tongues, were fed ice blocks, and remained in a critical condition.

Grass Fire Consumes 250 Acres Across Two Properties

A fire near Mr J. E. Barker Balding property spread to Mr Malcolm Kellpck land, burning about 250 acres of feed. Fire brigades led by Deputy Fire Controller A T Mo Waters and District Clerk F M Fabian arrived quickly. The blaze was controlled by 10:30 pm with only feed loss and no property damage.

Burra CWA Opens Third Link in England

Burra Branch of the CWA has opened a third link with women’s institutes in England since 1948. Members have exchanged parcels and reading matter with Piddington WI in Bicester, Oxon, Heybridge WI in Maldon, Essex, and Tafl Well WI in South Wales. Early replies began arriving in January. a copy appears on page eight.
