A full Burra Town Hall bid farewell to Mr and Mrs G Dobson of the Bank of Australasia as they move to Brunswick Melbourne. The mayor and community speakers praised their civic service and sport involvement, presenting a cash wallet and a warm send off.

The Record Offices Closed Over New Year Break

The Record announces annual leave for printing staff with the office closed from Wednesday December 28 to Monday January 10. After the December 28 issue, the next issue will appear Tuesday January 11 and printing clients and advertisers are asked to note the dates.

Bushfire Siren Ready Then Used Next Day at Mt Bryan

The siren installed at Borta Town Hall on Wednesday of last week was sounded the next day when a fire broke out on the Messrs T. J. and W. Quinn property north of Mt. Bryan. The blaze destroyed five acres of hay stubble 20 stacks of oaten hay and about four tons of baled hay. A strong north west wind aided the fire which threatened oats. A Coroner’s report is being prepared by Burra North Police. A second alarm was raised near Canowie about the same time.

Knapsack Spray Prevents Big Fire

Mr L K H Thomas used a knapsack spray to extinguish a fire near the railway line opposite his home three miles north of Byra. The couple had returned from assisting at a town junction and retired for the night when a crackling sound drew Mr Thomas to the blaze.

Harmony Night at Burra Buffalo Lodge Warble

A Buffalo Wit group held Harmony Night at the Burra Buffalo Lodge on Thursday evening. One brother stood to sing in a well known manner, briefly raising his arms as he began The Swallows of Spring, drawing audible remarks about his performance.

Burra Town Council Drops Rate to 3/6

The Burra Town Council Monday evening decided to reduce the rate from 3/ to 3/6 after a re assessment of the Town Area. The mayor warned of potential wage rises and material cost increases next year while noting the overdraft and need for gradual repayments. Dr Bevan supported 2/3 6 with expenses covered, but Dr Fisher urged 3/8. the motion to 3/6 finally passed after amendment failed.

Glen Finch Wins Burra Zone Quiz Final

Glen Finch aged 21 won the Burra Zone Final of the Country Quiz at Burra Town Hall, earning about £60 in prizes. Contestants included George Hardman of Brisbane. judges were J L Hawke, W Hayward, and L Tiver. Finch chose a crystal water set and a five valve wireless as prizes. The event, organized by The Macquarrie Broadcasting Corporation of Sydney, supported the Burra District War Memorial Committee with supper provided by local wives.

Dr M F Toal to Leave Burra Parish

Dr M F Toal D D of St Josephs Roman Catholic Church and Priest In Charge of Burra Burra parish will depart Burra around the first week of February. He has accepted a post as Professor of Philosophy at the Major Seminary in Adelaide.
