War Graves Appeal Urges South Australia Support

RSL appeals for funds to bury ex servicemen and women with no free burials. The Garden of Memory houses nearly 2000 graves as costs rise yearly. a target of £15,000 is pledged with £2,000 already raised, aiming £25,000 by September 3. Donations to RSL branches are welcomed and acknowledged.

RSL Entertain Bowling Club Hosts Burra Guests

Friday night competition at Burra Bowling Club brought 40 members of REL to the club rooms. Results show tight games with Griften 31 Watts 28, Gutwell 31 Pascoe 2, and Franklin 2 Terry 16. Day's team defeated Jeffery's, Kellaway beat Pascoe, and Bauer beat Riggs.

Big Improvement on Brewery Hill Road Works Completed

The district council reports extensive repair work on Brewery Hill Road from the river range to the bridge. Patches repaired on both sides near Deep Creek with material from the hill, creating a fair surface through to the council boundary.

Pastor Ashdown spoke for the church, Mr W Carpenter gave a bread knife and board, and a supper followed. Miss Till departs Burra to assume domestic duties. Mr Brien George will cover her post until permanent arrangements.

In the Week-end football roundup the top three teams Hulett Booborowle Burra won their matches while Hallett beat Leighton by 52 points and Spalding crushed Burra 32 to 8. Weather forced 411 games to be abandoned and postponed the Bookaburrs Trophy event to next Saturday.

Theft at Arnemar Station Reported by Porter and Porter’s Colleague

Alfred Porter reported theft at Arnemar Station after returning to his room to find £500 missing from a bundle of £10 and £5 notes kept in a attache case. Porter shared the room with Leslie Carson. Burra Ponce recovered £25. Detective O Mailey investigated and recovered £15, with a further £5 note found at Karas Stores after a plea.

The Burra show committee decides to hold the gala after the show again this year with a dance in the pavilion. Slideshows will operate and supper is likely. The dance has been a success in recent years and should be repeated with a good floor and mood.

Burra endured a cold snap with a major snow fall Sunday morning. Gardens and rooftops were blanketed as children built snowmen and balls formed in mock battles. Sheep losses were reported mostly among recently shorn flocks, with light casualties farther north.
