Local travelers from Burra complain of potholes dust and corrugations on the main Adelaide road. The road’s poor state drives drivers to detours via Barry, Peterborough, and hills, threatening town business and interstate travel without timely government action.
The Burré Branch of the Brocl owners' Association of South Australia discussed covering Baldina Creek with reeds hindering stock access. A hormone weed killer used in Victoria is proposed for Baldina, with the Burrs District Council asked to supply and spray. Estimated cost about £13 per acre plus labour, to be carried out soon.
A footer vehicle skidded across the footpath on George Street Burra and damaged the fence and garden of Mr E. E. Holder during the night of Thursday. Police or authorities are not named in the readable text.
Two vehicles collided in Market Square on Tuesday night at about 5 45 pm. Samuel Ernest Garrard of Burra drove east on Commercial Street toward Kingston Street and Norman Francis Kate of Whyalla traveled south. Both cars were damaged but no injuries were reported. Gar rard’s car sustained extensive damage with a broken front spring assembly windscreen and near front wheel. it was towed to a garage.
Burra Town Council discusses cemetery condition after widespread fire damage to shrubs and trees. A full time Curator may be appointed and a report will be tabled next meeting. The council also limits open spare graves to two at a time and orders other graves filled until needed.
Burra Burra District Council discussed ongoing vermin destruction on stock roads at its last meeting. The council noted extensive work in the Eastern district and that a reimbursement request to the Department of Lands was refused. It cited the district’s large area and wide stock roads as a challenge to vermin control.
A Thursday evening crash at about 5 pm in Burra involved a motor truck driven by Kevin White and a tourer car driven by John Bogisch. The truck backed from the kerbs while Bogisch sought a parking space. no injuries were reported though the tourer sustained damage to its hood and body.
An unknown vehicle collided with a Holden owned by Mr MF Pritchard in Kingston Street Burra. The parked car suffered rear bumper bar and rear guard damage.
Local residents report all netting guards protecting young pines at the War Memorial Oval disappeared last week. Police requested to investigate theft or vandalism as trees need protection from rabbits. Guards planned using four gallon drums as substitutes. The case's motive remains unclear.
Goldsbrough Mort & Co report a full sale at Burra on 10 April with high demand from Raith Coonsipyn Jabuck Par mandook and surrounding districts. Prime wethers and heavy ewes sold well while lines of shortains and bearing ewes attracted strong enquiry. numerous consignments from J J Warnes & Sons Koomooloo and Canopus Pastoral were listed with varied prices.
A letter from the Town Council for the Brooklyn Broadway Club requested permission to drop pamphlets from passing aircraft. The pamphlets promote a motor racing event at Port Wakefield. On motion by Cre Pritchard and White, permission was granted.
Burra Football Club applied to the Burra Town Council for permission to play football on War Memorial Oval in the coming season. Council granted permission but set no fee. Two delegates will attend a council meeting to discuss the fee.
May correspondence from the National Safety Council reached Burra via Roe Connell. Due to the late secretary’s health the matter was postponed, but the council may cooperate in establishing a NSC branch in Burra with public meeting plans left to the town clerk and mayor.
Telegram from Treasurer Sir Arthur Fadden reports Burra District has surpassed its Seventeenth Security Loan quota. Burra, with a 1,760 population, faced a 16,000 quota. final figures await loan closure on 17 April. A pale blue pennant honors exceeding the December quota.
