J C Duffey and family faced a peculi ar auto mishap Sunday afternoon on Monticello road near Will Dittman’s place when a young man in a horse and buggy spooked by an old bed blocking the road caused the horse to strike the car. Mrs Duffey sustained a possible arm injury from a broken auto shaft end. the horse and buggy avoided serious harm, the auto fender was dented, and the obstructing bed remains. Authorities urged removal of the hazard.
The treasury department disapproves of chain letters used to solicit funds for war savings stamps. They were not initiated by the national war savings committee. People who receive such letters should destroy them and break the chain.

W. E. Nethercutt attended the Threshers association in Indianapolis this week as the attendance reached a record high. Government restrictions on threshers will be enforced this season requiring machine owners to carry insurance for their employers and to safeguard the grain they thresh.
Mr and Mrs Alva Bishop of Port Arthur Texas visit relatives and old friends for a month He has lived in Texas eight years and works as a stillman at Gulf Coast Refining Co He visited the News office to prepay a year long subscription and says he has read the NEWS since it began by Mr Dean and enjoys its weekly arrival.
W. E. Nethercutt purchased a new separator to replace the old machine in use. The new unit was unloaded Friday, replacing the older separator shipped out Sunday evening. The larger machine includes the latest threshing appliances for efficient grain processing.
Milt Reiff sold forty five head of white hogs weighing a total 10 150 pounds to Eli Shafer last Thursday. The lot was raised under exceptionally sanitary conditions with access to clover pastures and well supplied feeders, tankage, ground feed, corn and ample fresh water.

Auctioneer Quincy Rye started bidding, with Ejt Shafer leading, driving the price to 40 dollars before the hen and brood were sold back to Red Cross. The final total was 95 dollars 50 cents, with Ben Hahn retaining ownership of the chicks.
The meeting of registered men to be held in Monticello next Sunday requires only those who are current residents of White County. We have omitted sending notices to those no longer living in the county, but if any have received notice they may report to the undersigned and need not appear. Class 5 men will be excused.
Mr and Mrs Charles Moore hosted guests Mr and Mrs Dave Haste and their daughter Evelyn at Mrs M E Davissons home eight miles north of Rensselaer. Dinner honored birthdays of Mr Moore Mrs Davisson and their brother James E Moore. Mr Haste family returned to Rensseler. Mr Moore's brother Thomas, wife and son joined on the trip.
Eighteen White county men left Monticello Tuesday over the Monon for Camp Taylor Kentucky to be inducted. Among them Raymond E Drewry of Idaville who had been rejected before for physical disability. Also John A Smith a Brookston candidate for sheriff. Parents of another recruit were natives of Southern Russia. Indiana conscription calls 13808 men with entrainment date not set. likely 25 to 30 from this county.
Young men who have turned 21 since June 5, 1917 must reach the recruiting office by June 3 to complete enlistment for service in the United States army. Eligible branches include coast artillery field artillery infantry cavalry medical corps cooks and bakers remount service and related roles.
The sun on June 21 reaches the northern limit of the zodiac entering Castor and, for several days, shows no observable change in position or sunrise and sunset times. This period marks the longest days for the northern hemisphere.
Charles Wagner of the northeast town area lost three cows to a Tuesday afternoon thunderstorm. Two calves were sacrificed after the cows were struck under a tree. The stock, valued at about 250 dollars, were insured through the Duffey Bros. agency.

Mrs. Harriet Pownell of North Main street was quietly surprised last Sunday for her 70th birthday. Logan Sport residents Mrs. A. J. Baltzell and Aaron Pownell organized the event with many relatives attending including Hattie Baltzell, Nailor family, Cecil Baltzell, and multiple Pownell family members. The guests departed late in the evening wishing her many happy returns.
