War department orders rapid creation of local exemption boards to prune draft rolls. Exemptions will include the physically defective and officials, ministers, students, certain U S employees, pilots and seamen, and those needed for national interests. Rules on exemptions to follow as cases arise.
The Kekemo Airplane Company organized with capital stock of 100000 dollars to build airplanes per government specs for coast defense sales. G L Brumbaugh, known for balloon work, is a major stockholder, with other members tied to the Haynes automobile factory.

The Children Day exercises at the Baptist church Sunday night drew a full house with many turned away. A fine program pleased the audience. two tableaus titled At The Cross and The Ten Virgins were well staged with Clarence Meeker lighting the scenes.
Frank Young of Medicine Lake Montana returns to his hometown Burnettsville for a ten day visit. He notes many changes since leaving ten years ago and recalls farming in spring wheat country with larger oat flax plantings and expanding potato acreage. The area also supports extensive cattle range shipping to market.
Mr and Mrs J C Duffey and Mr and Mrs Frank Davis visited Remington Sunday to view W L Gumm Peony Farm. Gumm, a local hardware merchant, grows peonies and other flowers on about six acres. Between five and six hundred people attended, with cars lining the road like a country fair.
Professor Harry E. Elder New of Monticello High School has been elected superintendent to replace James M. Leffel who resigned to lead Warsaw schools. Elder won over more than forty applicants and the principal position remains to be filled.
Premium lists are out for the Cass County Fair to be held August 28 through September 1. The event runs over five days with competitions and exhibitions for local residents.
Burnettsville residents unite for a Red Cross World War fund drive seeking 100 million dollars. A Tuesday church meeting hosted by Rev G B Heeter and led by J H McCully approved a local organizing committee and field canvass teams. Jackson township to cover eastern Burnettsville. six teams coded for town and countryside work. Early subscriptions reached 163 dollars at the Bank meeting and 250 dollars by mid afternoon with expectations to surpass the township allotment by weekend.
Voter registration in White County runs from June 22 to August 20 under a 1917 law. The County Board of Registration Commissioners appoints clerks W. O. Carruthers and Charge Wigmore to supervise registrations at the courthouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily except Sundays and holidays. The change precedes expanded eligibility from woman suffrage, with women gaining their first voting opportunity this year. If you expect to vote, you must register.
The Burnettsville State Bank offers $50 and $100 Liberty Loan Bonds at par to local buyers with limited means. Bonds are sold on easy terms and the bank emphasizes it sells for time to help Uncle Sam finance the war, not for profit.
Six men of Company C at Monticello have been promoted from the ranks to noncommissioned officers. Sergeants George Simons Frank Townsley and Clarence D Rotruck are named with corporals Lawrence Miller Clarence Schock and Wm Montz. The unit and others of the I N G will be called into service on August 5 and sent to the Atlanta training camp for drill before deployment to Europe.
Miss Elsa Showalter leaves Monday for a long Montana visit. Misses Vivian Porter and Doris Pearson hosted a farewell party at Doris Pearson’s home last Wednesday with roses and peonies on display. Attendees included Ida Showalter Fay Criswell Ruth Cochran Grace Risser Margaret Chilcott Elsa Showalter Clara Downs Geneva Pruitt Mary Hanna Minnie Amburgy and Vivian Porter. Games were played and refreshments served into the night.
The all day meeting at the Christian Church last Sunday drew a good crowd and a pleasant time. Children's Day exercises opened the morning Sunday School program, followed by a short communion. A basket dinner was served at noon in the basement, then Elder Bulger of Indianapolis preached at two o'clock in the afternoon.
Members of class No Nine of the M E Sunday school gathered at Mrs. James Clewell's home for a triple birthday celebration for Mrs. Clewell Mrs. A L Cochran and Mrs. Quincy Fry Contests were held games were played and light refreshments were served Attendees included Mrs Ray Personett Mrs George Clay Mrs N Iliff Mrs Jas Clewell Mrs L A Cochran Mrs Elton Shaffer Mrs Harry Berry Mrs D M Shepherd Mrs Quincy Fry and Mrs J N Townsley.
About 35 to 40 members of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs met at their hall for annual memorial services honoring departed brothers and sisters. The ritual was conducted in a solemn manner, and attendees then drove to Davis and Burnettsville cemeteries to decorate graves.
