The United States halted brewing of beer and malt beverages at midnight November 30 to conserve fuel transportation foodstuffs and grain for dairy feed. Duration of the ban was unknown and public reaction varied with some urging permanence.
Private George Simons, ex editor of the Private George Simons and former member of Battery C, arrived at his Monticello home Sunday from Camp Hancock after an honorable discharge. He declined officer training, saying he has had enough of army life. he is the first Battery C man to return.
Bert Watson, the man who shot and killed Elwin A. Berridge a Vandalia brakeman near Logan in February 1915, has been in Logan this week seeking parole from the life term after pleading guilty and receiving the sentence in White circuit court.
Rev. Isom H. Ferris of Kewanna will preach at the Great Eastern Tabernacle Sunday afternoon at three. Sunday school will be held just before the preaching service. Come out and hear him.
Burnettsville Elevator Co lists wheat at 2.09, corn 1.30 per cwt, oats 0.65, rye 1.48, clover seed 19.50, wool per pound, poultry prices: chickens 19 cents, hens unknown, roosters 12, spring chickens 19, turkeys young 28, old 22, Indian runners 16, geese 15.
Gen March announced the Thirty-eighth National Guard Division in France will head back to the United States. The unit includes two Indiana artillery regiments, among them Battery C of the 187th Field Artillery, in which many local youths serve. The division trained at Hattiesburg Mississippi, moved to England then France in October, but armistice halted front deployment.
A poem reflects on life lessons and divine plans. It speaks of regret turning to understanding as time reveals gold within trials. The speaker urges patience for a future where resting in God’s will is finally seen as best.
Solomon Carter, a Marion bridge contractor, sues Monticello grocer Charles W. Davis for 2000 damages in White circuit court. The action stems from an August auto accident north of Marion, also involving Emmett Hoover who sues Davis for damages to his Ford truck from the same crash.
The Baptist church invites a large attendance at Sunday school Sunday morning to study the Fruits of Faithfulness. In the absence of Pastor Rev Isom H Fecrs of Kewanna will preach both morning and evening services. A church business meeting is planned Saturday evening for trustees deacons and members. The Purdue university faculty announces that regular courses will resume after January 1 in all departments. Former students discharged from military or naval service may rejoin by February 1 1919 to complete the current year. Students who withdrew may re-enter by January 1 and a program of studies will be arranged to secure university credit for the year.
War department orders the sixteen tent camps in the South used as National Guard training centers to be abandoned as soon as possible. No additional tents or supplies will be sent, and only care for troops during demobilization will be done. Local boys at the camps will be affected.
Three trustees will be elected to serve two years beginning January 15 1919 at the regular church meeting Saturday evening December 7 1918. Dr J P Galbreth, Clerk.
Frank McMullen returned to Camp Taylor on Saturday following his brother’s death. He notes rumors circulating about when the soldiers will be demobilized, but no definite plans are known.
Postmaster General Burleson orders no AEF mail accepted without a return address on the envelope. The War Department requested the rule to ensure proper disposition of mail for expeditionary force members who have returned to the United States.
Promoters of sweet potato and possum roast advertise two young opossums last week and report enough offers for a dozen roasts. Demand has been filled and the market is glutted for now. It notes families also eating opossums and groundhogs as excellent eating.
Hartman cushion top wardrobe trunks featured in a Logansport advertisement. The dealer touts trunks traveling bags and suit cases as the best and most complete line. Deventer the hatter and furnisher promotes Logan sport Indiana sales.
The United States Food Administration allows sugar supplies to aid farm meat curing. Farmers wanting sugar for curing home butchered meat should apply via their county official.
The first quarterly conference of the Methodist church will convene at Royal Centre next Saturday night. A delegation from the local church is expected to attend. Services will be held at the M. E. church next Sunday morning at the usual hour. W. C. AYE, Pastor.
