The Lafayette Courier Journal argues intoxicated motorists pose a deadly danger and current penalties are inadequate. It urges stronger fines and jail sentences, predicting broader legislation at the next general assembly session. Judges in large cities are already enforcing harsher measures.
Rev Elvin Daniels resigns as pastor of the Christian Church at Monticello to accept a call from Eastern Heights Church in Indianapolis. He began in December 1919 from Kentland and will lead his new duties around October 1. His son Earl has substituted for Rev Ross during his vacation.
Dr Thomas J Bassett aged 74 pastor of the Methodist church at Monticello died at his home Saturday from effects of a stroke of paralysis suffered two weeks earlier. He was well known and has held many important charges.
Dr Daniel Beshear has bought a dental outfit and opened an office in Converse. The town, a small community of about 1600 people on the Wabash Grant county line, offers a promising field for a dentist.

Purdue entomology head Prof. J. J. Davis cautions farmers to sow wheat after fly free dates to maintain Hessian fly scarcity. Indiana guidance lists dates from September 21 in northern counties to October 6 in the south, stressing proper ground conditioning, fertilizer use, and quality seed.
Farmers should delay chinch bug burning until after they settle in winter quarters, with best practice during November. Second generation bugs are in corn fields, eggs laid in adjacent fields, and bugs migrate to protected areas by September to October. Deep thorough burns in November destroy many bugs and expose others to winter cold.
The 10th annual Great Eastern School reunion at Spencer Park Logansport featured a noon dinner and talks by Harrel on school history and a poem by Scott Wiriek. George B. Davis and B. I. Stuart addressed citizenship and community goals as officers were reelected and a history committee formed. About 100 attendees. Next reunion planned for Burrows.
Miss Ruth Tobias and German McLellard were united in marriage on Tuesday at the bride’s mother Paul Tobias home with Rev G B Heeter officiating. The couple kept the ceremony secret until Sunday when announced at the Harvest Home meeting at the Beatherelanch. The couple enjoys a circle of friends who will extend best wishes.
Jonathon Henry, Burnettsville's oldest resident, marked his 93rd birthday with a Saturday gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. N Benjamin. About 45 guests, including Milton and Bert Henry and families, Mrs. Mary Blatchley, Mrs. Grace Leslie and kin, and James Allison and wife from Gary, enjoyed cream cake and watermelon on the lawn. The event left attendees with a general good time and optimism for a possible centenarian milestone.
The Civil Service Commission informs Washington the sole candidate, BF Price Jr, passed the Monticello postmaster exam held June 13. The Post Office Department will request presidential nomination for him.
Pennsylvania officials visited Monticello on Monday to arrange lighting for the railroad bridge over the Tippecanoe River. The bridge, guarded during strike troubles, will receive lights to improve safety and visibility.
Miss Geneva Pruitt was the guest of Miss Margaret Chilcott Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Siferd of Logansport were the guests of Clark Siferds Sunday. Miss Evyn Peter of Logansport was the guest of Lena and Opal Galbreth, a few days last week. Mrs. Etna Massena of Logansport spent Sunday with her uncle B. F. Eyman and wife of south of town. T. J. Hanna of Monticello was the guest of his parents while looking after business here last Monday.
Ruth Dillon married Harold Povallon of Atlanta Georgia at the home of Mr and Mrs I A Cochran in Bursellsville Indiana Rev G B Heeter officiated The couple planned to reside in Atlanta Georgia An out of town wedding party from Elnora Indiana Wabash Indiana Monticello Indiana and Chicago attended the ceremony and reception.
J C Duffey and wife enjoy an outing at Webster Lake this week. Florence Shaffer returns home Tuesday from Indianapolis where she attended school this summer. Mark Sparks moved to Logansport last Saturday to take a job at the Kiddy Knead bakery. Robert Heeter and family of Chalners were weekend guests for relatives and attended the Brethren church Home Coming.
A union service will be held Sunday evening at the Baptist church with songs recitations and choruses performed by local people. It closes the town’s summer union meetings and regular services will resume afterward.
Mary Bailey of Curveton visited her sister Mrs. Clara Frye and joined the Home Coming event in Lockport on Saturday.
