Washington announced that about one million volunteers are under arms for the war with Germany. Of these, 448,858 have volunteered since U S entry, with 687,000 drafted troops to follow. Total strength will reach 1,630,141 and rise to 2,130,141 after further drafts, surpassing Civil War peak deployments.
Carroll County’s conscription board completed exams for 250 men with 62 certified to the district board. Eighty two sought exemptions for dependents, seven for religious belief. Non combatant service applies to the religious exemption. Eighty four failed physicals and four exams were postponed. A second call asked for 300 more men to be examined this week. county quota is 125 with ten percent above to be certified ready.
Miss Connie Gray, who underwent surgery at a local hospital, was permitted to leave the facility recently after her procedure.
A dispatch from Hattiesburg Mississippi in the American Lumberman dated August 13 reports rapid progress on Camp Shelby. Over a dozen large warehouses and more than a hundred mess halls are completed and a gravel train has laid 25 miles of gravel roads. About 4 000 000 feet of lumber used and much more building remains including a hospital over sixty acres to be built.
Rice flour is increasingly used in bakeries for bread. It costs more than wheat flour but absorbs more water, helping bread stay moist and better preserved. It adds no nutritional loss and has long been part of prepared pancake mixes with strong sales.
Former United States Senator John W. Kern died in Ashville North Carolina Friday night from uremic poisoning aged 68. He served as majority floor leader and chairman of the democratic conference committee before retiring from the Senate in March. He was a party leader in the state and a national worker with many local friends.
Rev. Walton of the Baptist church had an eventful Saturday night about his trip home from Winona. An auto party offered a lift, but after drinking they ditched the car and forced him to walk again until a farmer’s call brought a Logansport machine to his aid. He reached home safely.

R L Alden of near Danville sold a car load of cattle on the Indianapolis market Wednesday last week. The cattle averaged 1,490 pounds and brought 14.55 dollars per hundred, totaling 216 87. This was said to be the highest price ever paid in a western market for cattle.

Joe George and Sherman Risser with L N Benjamin made a business trip to Garyleat Thursday.
Final physical examination results at Monticello Friday listed thirteen Company C members to be discharged due to physical incapacity. Two men have treatable bad teeth and may reenlist after dental work. others named include Brewer Pirie Reprogle Drewry Maggert Lucas Warfel Rector Hunter Sink Griffin Bassett Westerhouse. Detachment will be absorbed back into the company, not reducing overall size.
The Cass County Fair will run August 28 to September 1 at Logansport grounds. Premiums are large and entries expected to fill all classes. speed events look strong. Evening exhibitions by electric light will run every night except Saturday. A busy lineup aims to entertain all visitors.
The twenty sixth annual Good and Hilderbrand reunion will be on Sunday September 2 1917 on the lawn at Mrs Tib Guthrie home. All friends of the families are invited to attend. Olive Beshoar Secretary.
Rev G B Heeter and family plan to attend a Home Coming service of the Brethren Church in North Manchester this Sunday. Millard Wimner visited from Chicago and brought his aunt Mrs Jane Casper back for a short city visit. A F Galbreth proudly remodelled his residence into a bungalow with a wide south porch. Robert Marsh and family arrived for a visit while Mrs Marek and children stay with Mrs Perkins as others return to work.
