In Burnet County the sheriff primary pits incumbent Wallace Riddell against Cecil J. Rhoades Jr after Riddell failed to win a majority by 373 votes in May. Riddell cites a 37 year on call record while Rhoades criticizes jail record-keeping and personnel control prompting a recounting contest.
Sheriff Wallace Riddell said none of his deputies acted unlawfully and disputed claims of campaign activity. He stated no official vehicle was used for campaigning and named Modena Currington and others who helped at a Meet the Candidate night.
Memorial Day saw full motels and thriving restaurants across Burnet County with no vacancies reported in Barnet, Sundown, Llano, and surrounding towns. Private campgrounds also reported record occupancy while law enforcement noted an unusually quiet period with only minor incidents and no major accidents.
A three member accreditation team surveyed Burnet-Shepperd Memorial Hospital last Friday and will report to the Chicago based hospital review board within three months. Hospital administrator Bob Lively said no hearings were requested and the team, not from Texas, will determine if the hospital meets established accreditation criteria.
County records show 118 absentee ballots cast with 12 more to mail by Saturday. Incumbent Wallace Riddell faces Cecil Rhoades Jr. in the sheriff race at Marble, plus contests for railroad commissioner, Criminal Court of Appeals judge, and 33rd District Judge. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 16 precincts statewide.
