Burnet County Bulletin (Newspaper) - February 21, 1977, Burnet, Texas
L Dallas Taxaj us lug a a Burnet mayor candidate lists goals Burnett a Veteran City councilman Howard Benton who announced his candidacy for mayor of Burnet last week told the bulletin that he has several goals for the City should he be elected. Benton is currently in the Middle of this third term As an Alderman and he said that he will resign his position on the Council to run for mayor. There Are three major problems that Benton said he wants to solve if he is elected. Quot solid waste disposal sewer disposal and the Airport Are three things i think the City needs to make important decisions on Quot Benton said. Quot we have to acquire More property and additional areas to be used As a land fill site Quot the mayoral candidate said Quot solid waste disposal is a vital City service and we Are going to have to work this problem he added that waste disposal would probably be his number one priority. Tire present land fill site is expected to reach its full capacity in several months and it has been one of the Council s major concerns for the last three months. The City operated land fill has been used by county residents and by the inks Lake state Park As a garbage disposal site for several years because of this the City Council has asked the county to financially contribute to the project but the response has not been very favourable. Benton said that he is not in favor of limiting the land fill to Burnet residents but he does not feel the City can afford to provide the service for the entire county. Quot the sewer system is in Good shape now Quot Benton told the bulletin but we will soon be faced with a growth problem and will probably need to one possible solution that Benton said should be considered is the possibility of using partially purified water on land. He said that this solution meets the standards but that it would take some work to get starred. The aldermen recently expressed support of sending $47,000 for an Airport hangar that would be run by a private firm and Benton seemed concerned about keeping the asset of the Airport. We Are possibly in the position to get a solution to the Airport problem if we can get a building and pay for it Quot he said the future pay out on the building could be less than $000 per month and if we hire a fixed base operator it would a at least that costly. Benton added that if the City decides to build a new Airport it should be built on the present site because the City already own two thirds of the land there. Quot we have an asset there and of we Don t make a step Forward soon we May Loose that asset Quot Benton added of Haie elected Benton mid that he Quot would Tike to use Revenue sharing fund at seed Money for curbing and guttering projects. Quot without curbs end guitars there it no need to pave the streets. He said. Quot and i know the City can afford to pave the the candidate spoke favourably of the City s financial status and said. Quot they really look Good Quot we Are not looking at tax increases and can probably go for a number of years without an increase.
