Tonight Burnet’s Chamber of Commerce will announce the 1975 Outstanding Citizen and name two other awardees for outstanding rancher and outstanding Chamber Committee member. Winners were kept secret by officials prior to the event and chosen by public ballot in Burnet.

Bowen calls action momentary setback in school board race

Bowen, chairman of the Burnet County Good Government League, notes Holton George’s withdrawal from the Marble Falls School Board race as a temporary setback and says the league may endorse other candidates before the March 3 filing deadline. The league had endorsed Al Zerm and Merv Noah. George cited pressure as his reason for leaving.

Burnet High Principal Contract Not Approved

Burnet High School board did not approve principal Harry Heickman’s contract this week. Heickman said he already has another job lined up and would not disclose details. Board officials declined to comment citing personnel matters.

Burnet School Board President E B Price filed for re election to the board. A Bertram rancher and Branbury High School graduate with a Sam Houston State University agriculture degree, Price served as Infantry Captain and has led as board president this year. He and his wife Billie Lou Bryson have two children. Price cited community support and his belief the board needs more experience for effective service.

Bertram Deputy Denies Speed Trap Aim With New Radar

Bertram opts for a $2200 mobile radar unit for Deputy Sheriff Frank Hines to catch speeders in school zones. Hines says he will not turn Bertram into a speed trap and has issued two tickets for speeds over 55 in a 35 zone. He notes protection of children as the main goal and denies threats to quit over the radar purchase.

Burnet's varsity girls meet Bellville at 9 a.m. in Brenham in the regional playoff opener. A win advances the Bulldog team to the 11 a.m. East Chambers vs Waco Robinson winner, with the 7 p.m. night game to follow. The victor moves toward the state tournament in Austin Feb 26-28.

Burnet Varsity to Face No 2 Cameron in Bi-District Clash

Burnet High School hosts Cameron ranked second in state for a Bi-District basketball showdown Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Killeen. The winner advances to the regional tournament in Brenham next Saturday February 27 with the state tournament to follow in Austin in early March.

KHLB Hopes To Be On Air Monday After Fire

Burnet station KHLB owner-manager Harry Kaindi said a new transmitter and broadcasting system are en route from Harris Corp and will allow KHLB to return to the air at 1380. Temporary HQ are at the old Petrick beverage house as crews salvage from the fire site.
