Burnet County Bulletin (Newspaper) - December 29, 1977, Burnet, Texas Burnet a the Christmas season did t neglect Burnet this year As senator Lloyd Bentsen s office announced tuesday that the Farmers Home administration if Hai has approved a �120, Industrial development Grant to the City of Burnet. The funds will be used to install a 12-Inch water Supply line from the Post Mountain municipal storage tank to Industrial Park to provide fire Protection. Four thousand residents live in the area county commissioners mayor Howard Benton said in response to the news Quot sounds Good. We be been working on it a Good while and we re glad to get it Benton added that he wanted to publicly thank the workers at the Fredericksburg office of Omha for their help in getting the Grant approved. Quot they carried the Ball on it Quot Benton said the City first applied for the Grant about six months ago according to City manager Jack meet sees few votes by Miles Hawthorne Burnet a the Burnet county commissioners met in regular session tuesday As the usual monday meeting was delayed due to the holidays to take up county business including the Sale of property in Briggs and Lake Victor discussion of employee benefits and retirement policy a possible raise for Justice of the peace Pauline Fuston and subsidization for the Spicewood Volunteer fire department. Final action on most of the business was delayed pending research by the commissioners though some decisions were reached. The commissioners voted to advertise for bids on five acres of land in the Briggs area which were purchased by the county when a larger lot was divided by a Highway. However a smaller tract posed some problems As no one was certain who owned the property. The land is less than an acre near Lake Victor and was also split from a larger tract by a Road. While the county appears to own the land county records show it in the name of Kate Tooke and a question was raised As to whether taxes Are being paid on the land. It was decided by a unanimous vote to change county policy to Start counting employee benefits from the first Day an employee starts work with the county instead of beginning after six months As has been the policy in the past. Commissioner Johnny Allen expressed the opinion that the new system would provide extra incentive for workers to stay with the Job other employee policies which were decided by the commissioners included carrying sick leave Forward in succeeding years to give Long time employees Benefit of All accumulated sick leave though if an employee quits All sick leave and vacation time would be lost. In the event of an employee being fired the county would give two week s Severance pay. A request from the Spicewood Volunteer fire department for the county to begin paying �100 per month for maintenance of Spicewood s fire truck was not acted on pending research by the commissioners to determine if the truck is currently in operating condition. It was suggested that Justice of the peace Pauline Fuston be Given a pay raise but action was postponed until the commission-3rs can Check with mrs. Fuston to determine How much of a raise she could receive before her salary conflicted with social Security payments. Mrs. Fuston did not request a raise but county records reflect that her precinct court is bringing in More funds than other courts. The commissioners also voted to extend the Bond for Justice of the peace m r. Palmer for 1978 Tippit who further said the funds will not be needed until the cite has progressed further with the project. The next step in planning Tippit said is to release the engineers specifications for the project and to advertise for bids which will probably occur in mid january the City Council will need to discuss How the City will finance its half of the project the government supplies the Money on a 11 Matching funds basis. Tippit was scheduled to meet at midweek with a representative of first Southwest co fiscal advisers to plan financing for the project. Tippit said the City s half of the funds will probably come from certificates of obligation to be sold to an investor either a local Bank or another investor which Ever offers the Best terms for the City. The new water line is being viewed As an asset to the Indus trial Park As Well As area rest dents not Only in terms of better serving the industries already operating or building but also to make the area More attractive to prospective industries. At present Johnson s inc. And Continental Telephone of Texas Are based at the Industrial Park while United Cabinet Corpora Tion Aristokrat and Merkle Wil hams Chevrolet Oldsmobile Are building quarters on Sites at the Park. In Aristokrat is one of the industries at Industrial Park to Benefit from the proposed 12-Inch water line. When the commissioners received last month s electric Bill for the Library in excess of $900 they expressed a desire to have a talk with the project architect who told them the Bill should average around $400. The Library Board then announced last week the City had sent word that the Bill was in error a mistake by a meter Reader had resulted in an overcharge of $300, but at tuesday s meeting the commissioners were not much relieved. The $600 plus Bill was still too High to suit them.
