In an interview at the bulletin offices thursday Doggett expressed his interest in equalization Board to meet next monday Burnet the Board of equalization of the Burnet consolidated school District will consider citizens cases and queries concerning taxes at its meeting monday August 8, at 9 in the school tax office. Assessor collector John Grissom and Board members Ramsey Clinton Houston Hill and mrs. G. A. Glimp will assemble in order to meet the Public in open discussion of tax assessment in the Burnet . Changing the basis of taxation of farm and ranch lands from the Standard of fair Market value to one of productivity. In the last session of the legislature Doggett presented legislation which would provide tax Relief for Farmers and ranchers by assessing property at its agricultural value rather than at the value dictated by the current real estate Market. Through Doggette legislation passed the Bill cannot be implemented until an amendment to the state Constitution meets the Public s approval at present the Constitution requires an equal basis of taxation a single vote blocked the attempt to put the necessary amendment to a referendum vote. Doggett told the bulletin that the heaviest opposition to his proposal came from lumber interests and land speculators who would not Benefit by the alteration of the tax system. From county to county there Are no standards or qualifications mandated for tax assessors collectors a situation which congressman Peveto attempted to Correct Doggett said. He emphasized that the tax Relief would Only apply to family farms and ranches and those which fit the chapters descriptions in the internal Revenue code which covers Small businesses and corporations with limited Stock ownership.
