The landowners gathered at tuesday night s regularly scheduled Burnet . Board meeting to voice their reactions to a land revalue schedule that was presented by Burnet . Tax assessor collector . Grissom. The new schedule raises the revaluation of class one land from $58.46 per acre to $175 per acre class two land from $53.86 per acre to $150 per acre and class three land listed under the old schedule at $50 per acre to $125 per acre in the new proposal. Jim Luther local landowner and Raleigh Ross a local cattleman and ranch manager led opposition to the new revalue schedule. Luther opened debate with the Board by stating Quot we have to go elsewhere to earn a Hving just to be Able to have our ranch s not to the applause of the audience he added Quot you re eventually going to just take out Grissom said Quot on the old value we were Only Twenty per cent of the governor s office Quot this revaluation of ranch land will equalize itself better with other taxation clarifications Quot he said. Ross president of the local Independent cattleman association said that Quot from the cattleman s Point of View we can not pay these Ross said the Board did not have to go along with the governor s plan but had an Grissom stated that the change Quot comes from the Constitution and we have no school superintendent Robert Wilkin told the landowners that Quot the revalue schedule did not mean a tax he said . 750 is going through the legislature and should it be passed the Burnet . Besides the scale models the group showed numerous photographs of the More attractive areas around the City and the least attractive aspect of the City including junk accumulation decrepit fences and dilapidated structures. One of the Sites suggested would be located in the Block where the existing fire station is now located with a Diagonal opening on main and Washington with a Central courtyard. It featured a recreational facility in the general location of Tho Kroger s Fried Chicken building. Another concept placed City Hall where la Qifu Burnet hotel was a recreational facility where the old Burnet bulletin building is and fire and police facilities where Kalb radio station is located. Quot it was generally agreed by the students that the Square is easy to miss and that it would be desirable to tie the Square into the Highway without rotting the Highway dominate Quot said City administrator Jack Tippo. A2 Marble Falls a shooting incident Early monday morning has left a Marble Falls Man dead. Dead As the Jesuit of the shooting was 34 year old Marcos Joe Sanchez of the Cottonwood resort area. Charged with murder in connection with the death was Mark Najar 37, of Marble Falls. He was being held in Llano county jail. The incident according to authorities occurred about 8 50 . On state Road 2147 in the Southeast part of the county. Sanchez was shot once with a .410 Shotgun. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Llano Hospital. Investigation of the incident continues with Texas Ranger Troy Porterfield and the Llano county sheriff s department conducting the investigation. Marble Falls schools to receive Facelift by Burnet classroom teachers continuing contracts asked Burnet a request for changing to continuing contracts by the Burnet classroom teachers association met opposition from the Burnet . Board of trustees tuesday night. The classroom teachers Are seeking a commitment from the Board to switch from term contracts to continuous contracts. Andy Williams spokesman for the teachers group said teachers Quot would feel More secure and could concentrate More on education if they were under continuous Quot with term contracts politics could possibly enter into whether a teacher was rehired or not Quot he said. School superintendent Robert Wilkin told the teachers he Quot did not exactly oppose their Quot it is just a matter of timing. I think your bringing this matter before us tonight is poor timing Quot Wilkin said. The group was told by Wilkin that a Bill is presently in the legislature concerning continuous contracts for teachers. He said the Bill has been reported favourably out of committee. Quot the Texas association of school boards has always opposed continuing contracts Quot Wilkin said. He added that Quot he Felt continuing contracts opened the door to additional after lengthy discussion both the Board and teachers agreed to a special committee being formed to discuss the matter More fully. Representing the school Board will be Beauford Rowney Joy Taylor. And Loy Scruggs. The teachers decided on Andy Williams Marie Herbert and Harold Mcclung to serve on the committee. High school principal Cliff Vandeventer and Wilkin will meet with the group. Gene Taylor elected school Board president Burnet new Burnet . Board member Joy Taylor who Defeated Sally Williams in the april 2 election was sworn in tuesday night at the regular Burnet . Board meeting. Gene Taylor was elected president of the Board replacing . Price who continues to serve on the Board. Beauford Rowney continues to serve As vice president and Johnny Despain As Secretary. Marble Falls existing school facilities in the Marble Falls is will soon receive needed repairs and face lifting if acceptable bids Are received by the Marble Falls is Board of trustees. The Board monday night approved phase 1 of a summer maintenance and improvements plan that will Cost approximately $21,000. Alfred Zerm chairman of the a find maintenance committee presented an itemized maintenance request to the Board. The request had been broken Down into priorities by school superintendent Charles Hundley who said Quot we re reasonably optimistic that funds in the neighbourhood of $30,000 will be available for maintenance this Hundley stated that Marble Falls is business manager Martha Green had run an analysis of the general operating fund expenditures for the remainder of the fiscal year. Quot it appears that the school District will have a surplus of approximately $90,000 which is $36,644 in excess of the budgeted surplus of $53,456,"hundley added. The repairs to the Junior High gym roof would be the largest expenditure Hundley said. The estimated repair Cost for the roof would exceed $12,000, he said. Board president Gerald Edwards said Quot i m in favor of going with phase in agreement with Edwards the Board will now prepare bids for repairs at the Junior High school Mie building old elementary High school new elementary and band Hall. In a related matter Barbara Crownover and Nancy herring ton representing the Marble Fah Racket club appeared before the Board to present an Offar on behalf of their club which would contribute financially towards construction of two or three new Tennis courts. Burnet Beauty contest deadline set May 5 Burnet eleven Burnet Girts have entered the miss Burnet contest slated june 3 at Burnet High school auditorium. Deadline for expressing interest in entering the contest and for sponsors for each girl is May 5. Girls Between the Ages of 17 and 26 who have never been married Are eligible to enter. Each is to be sponsored by a business or civic group. Those interested should con tact the chamber of Commerce office or mrs. Pauline Berry chairman of the publicity committee for the chamber.
