Burlington Herald (Newspaper) - January 5, 1950, Burlington, Iowa Longfellow the pen became a Clarion five cents per copy Burlington Iowa thursday january s. 150 volume three no. 40octim of a meanest Bandit the United states in world affairs a reminder of a reminder going in to 1950, the american people Are faced with some serious problems As is said to be the Case every new year. Each year the Public is advised that the coming year is to be a Tough one that there Are going to be important decisions to make and vast difficulties to overcome. It was said at the beginning of 1949, and the prediction held True. It is being said again at the beginning of 1950, and we would be willing to Wager that the prediction will hold True again. To give you an idea of the work that has to be done we suggest you consider the work that had to be done during the past year. The Council on foreign Rea tons annually publishes a report titled a the United states in world it is a sort of contemporary history outlining the Progress or Lack of Progress of the preceding year. The report recently published by the Council harpers $5.00 covers the period from april 1948 to april 1949. It was a big year. The european recovery program completed its first year and is now Well on its Way toward completion of its second the first noticeable split occurred behind the Iron curtain As Tito began his War with the co inform the chinese communists routed the u. supported nation Aust army War american military strength it could be a year i real peace rather than a year of meaningless peace As was the year now dying. Of one thing we can be reasonably sure if we Learned nothing from the events of 1949 we stand Little Chance of saving even that which we. Have gained. If 1949 did not teach us a lesson 1950 certainly will although the learning process in the year to come might be bitterly unpleasant. The previous lesson we should have Learned in 1949, that we Are susceptible to panic when we live in a world of Rumor. We should have Learned a great Deal about the strength and methods and purposes of those we Call our enemies. We should have Learned that we Are living in an Active world and that we can no More deny our unique position in it than we can deny our very existence. We cannot deny that China is now a communist state we cannot deny that three latin american states have dictatorships we cannot deny that the a forces of democracy Are outnumbered a tremendously out umber do by the forces they oppose. Its a big world and we re in it. In it so completely that a War Between the jews and the arabs half a world away affects everything we do. In it so completely that we must find a Way to live with our neighbors whether we like them or not. Bab Sun Boob Sawhill hmm much about the actions it the world we live in is a tribute of the highest kind to the system by which we govern ourselves. It offers us an Opportunity to see where we re going and Why what is being done and who is doing it when something has happened and How it affects us. Children need to be reminded that they Are responsible for what they do. Their parents often need the same reminder although often there is no one to make it. This Book is a As the air forces poured supplies into Berlin during the months of the blockade the Atlantic pact became a reality Germany the Defeated state began to make demands of its conquerors. The never ending struggle for Power blazed through 1948 and 1949, and the fires Are undiminished As the world awaits 1950. Looks bigger than it is the scope of the struggle is so tremendous it has often seemed beyond the grasp of humans and people have been inclined to ignore the conflict rather than attempt to Analyse it. Fortunately for Mankind there Are some who have been willing to remain concerned with what the rest of the world is doing and others who have attempted to provide solutions for the questions at hand before they become unanswerable except by Force. A the United states in world affairs a being an unprejudiced account or As unprejudiced As anything can be these Days lists the attempts that have been made the solutions that have been offered the work that has been done the projects that have succeeded or failed. To ignore these things is to ignore the efforts of the few who Are at least trying. Considering things like these at the beginning of a year is better than a ter several months of the year Are past. 1950 has As yet no amp amp amp amp m shot by Bandit who held up her fathers tavern on Chest Mas eve 7-year-old Penny gust hugs doll her Mother brought to her in a Chicago Hospital.
