27th Annual Vermont Grand Army Encampment Opens

The 27th annual encampment of the Vermont Grand Army of the Republic convened at the Y M C A hall with reports from department officers, speeches by leaders of the GAR and Woman’s Relief Corps, and a program featuring music, a banquet, and a moving address on pensions and veterans' welfare. Delegates and guests include H Holton, W Veazey, J Adams, Gov. Puller, and Capt. Leach among others from Burlington, Montpelier, and St. Albans.

Randall nomination faces tough Senate fight in Vermont

Washington January 2 reports indicate Arthur C. Randall faces sturdy opposition to his postmaster nomination at St Johnsbury. Vermont figures including Wendell Phillips Stafford Col Blossom and GB Smalley urged support while others protested. Hearing continues as delays reportedly stem from missing papers delaying confirmation.

Justice Proceedings Open in Addison County Court Session

The forenoon docket included Montrr.rek van versus FP Woodworth on a special assumpsit claim for about 10 stone butter jars from defendant. Verdict favored defendant Button & Button for plaintiff and i ht. Hard and William H. Bliss for defense. Julia Walker's administrator versus Abel Walker's administrator involved a 1860 vote renewal question. Addison County Court awarded 82002 to plaintiff W. T. Bliss. Loraine A. Lockwood sued Theron M. Sturtevant et al. but the case was discontinued without costs. Next up Hayes versus Colchester mills from Chrittenden County.

Eight Inmates Die In County Farm Fire At Boose

A blaze at the county farm in Boose Iowa last night killed eight of nine incurables confined there. Steward Holcomb says he banked the fire at 10, and he cannot explain the start. The furnace overheating and cold weather are blamed. One inmate escaped injured but nonresponsive. The storm raged with 6 below zero as the fire broke out.

Prince Bismarck's Berlin Departure Receives Grand Crowds

The aged prince left Friedrichsende for Berlin to a rousing sendoff with flowers along the way. In Berlin he was greeted by an immense crowd at the depot and honored by Emperor William with a Cavalry badge and full court welcome. The reception drew cheering crowds across Berlin as patriots praised the day as a symbol of reconciliation for Germany.
