NFO holding action report on farm prices and hogs
Halvor Jacobson reports that Winnebago county farmers largely cooperate with the NFO holding action. Week one receipts fell about 72 percent, week two around 50 percent, and early this week remain below normal. Officials seek Justice Department review of meat price spikes while farm prices rose little. NFO aims to offset higher farm prices with savings in procurement, transport, and labor, estimated at $3.00 per hundredweight on livestock. Contracts favor 190 to 210 pound hogs, potentially reducing tonnage to curb top-price hogs and boosting pork sales by about 10 percent according to processors. Meetings are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. in the Thompson school recreation room, with updated bulletins and TV updates on Channel 12 at 10:30 p.m. and Channel 6 at 6:15 p.m.
