Week of Witness Study At Bethlehem Lutheran Church

Bethlehem Lutheran Church will hold a Week of Witness with a family study on 1 Corinthians each evening Sunday through Thursday. The course aims to help families study the Bible inductively and discuss its meaning in faith and practice under the new ALC merger. A church dinner and picnic were held recently for local families including the Swalve and Heifner families.

Reckless Driving Charge After Highway Crash

About 10 45 P M Friday Paul Perez Jr of Elmore with Dennis Becker in a 1954 Chevrolet exited a parking area near a Dairy Creme stand and cut into Royal Armstrongs wrecker parked north of the pavement. Both were hurt as the car and wrecker damaged. Perez required 14 stitches for lip and tongue cuts while Becker needed 8 stitches for a head wound. Marshall Bohl charged Perez with reckless driving and ordered him to appear before Mayor Carman.

See White Sox Tigers Split

Mr and Mrs John S Wubben and family drove to Rockford Illinois Saturday to visit her brother and sister in law Gerald and wife. They then went to Chicago for a double header between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers with one win each. The Wubbens returned home Monday stopping in Readlyn to visit Dr Clinton Berryhill.

Buffalo Center School Election Set For September 12 1960

Voters in the Buffalo Center Consolidated School district will select a director for a three year term and a treasurer for a two year term in a Monday election. Filing closed at 12 noon on Friday September 2 1960 with Swen Larson Clyde Steffenson and E E Sapp as candidates for the director post. Polls open 12 noon to 7 p m at the school house on September 12 1960.

Return From Trip Through Black Hills

Mr and Mrs Art Kramer and son Darel returned Tuesday after a week in the Black Hills area of South Dakota. They also visited western North Dakota. They traveled in Art's self built trailer and did not buy meals, camping in trailer parks and National Park areas. Donald Kiewiet came home last Thursday after a vacation with his grandparents and Wilbur and Mrs Harvey Gilbert.

Spanish TV lessons reach 60 Winnebago students

About 3,700 first and second year grade students across seven Iowa counties will enroll in a national Spanish course via KGLO TV starting September 6. Sal F. Siqueiros leads the instruction with support from county superintendents serving as planning and executive committee members. Enrollment costs vary by county, with Winnebago paying 11.5 percent of net costs. adult and non public-school participants may join for a $6 fee plus a textbook.

VFW Auxiliary To Sponsor Writing Contest

The VFW Auxiliary met in Esthville at the Post Home with 21 members present. Norma Dudding won the door prize as officers read August and September orders and announced the 6th District meeting. The group voted to sponsor the Writing Contest again and planned a fall coffee and baked goods sale for September 29.

Buffalo Center Opens New Bowling Lanes And Leagues

Buffalo Center launches Buffalo Lanes with eight lanes and modern equipment. League play began Tuesday with Strikers League of eight teams including Ley Motors Lakota and Buffalo Center Cooperative Creamery. Women’s and Twin City leagues start midweek with teams from local businesses and farms. upcoming leagues include an unnamed group and a Church Area League planned for Fridays.

Ladies Literary to Open New Year

The Ladies Literary Circle will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday September 13 at 2:00 PM at Mrs. Josephine Murray’s home with the program committee as co hosts. A drought era flower show was planned with awards for best bloom or arrangement. County officers are invited as guests. Forest City case tossed. Rank faces minor delinquency charge

In Forest City a hearing held Wednesday dismissed the beer sale to a minor case against Nels Rank of Buffalo Center. Rank was charged with contributing to a minor’s delinquency and will face Justice of Peace Earl Christen. a $100 fine cap applies. Buffalo Center Community School reports a new enrollment high of 704 on Sept 6, surpassing 686 in 1957 and previous years.

Higbee's Blue Room Tavern to Open Today

Mr and Mrs Rowland Higbee are converting the old post office into a tavern. After securing the building in August they applied a new roof and repainted on September 1. The tavern opens Thursday September 8 under the name Higbee's Blue Room Tavern with a 24-foot back bar and 22-foot front bar, six leather covered booths, and standard bar fixtures.

Local Boys Return Home After Hospital Stay

Mr Vern Davids recovering at home after serious injuries from a Sunday car crash August 14 at Buffalo Center Hospital. His son Kim also hurt is home and mobile with care while Craig Benedix rests at his Kas son Minnesota residence on crutches. Both are first graders eager to return to school as family prays for full recovery.

Family Visit to University Hospital in Town City

Mrs Jensen and Mr Adams with Michael of Webster City visited Carl Jensen patient at University Hospital last Saturday. Jensen showed some improvement after treatment. They also called on Jimmy Rich grandson of Harry Adams, who has been at Iowa City for several months.

Steamerama Draws Weaver and Neighbors to Oakland

Mr and Mrs George Weaver and Mr and Mrs Joe Johnson drove to Oakland Minnesota on Sunday for the Steamerama a three day celebration. On display were old machinery including steam engines and threshing machines. The visit connected them with longtime neighbors from their farming start thirty years ago.

Optometrist Peltola to Practice One Day a Week in Buffalo Center

Dr. H W Peltola opens an optometry office in the Buffalo Hotel, Buffalo Center, on Thursday September 1. He will be there weekly with instruments including phoropter and keratometer, offering refractive correction, binocular testing, and lens adjustments. He also maintains a Lake Mills practice and is a WWII and Korea veteran with Masonic and Eastern Star memberships.
