Buffalo Center area school board election faces apathy

Voters in Buffalo Center and Rake face a busy county race on Monday September 8 as Area IL and Area III seats on the Winnebago County Board of Education are decided. Incumbents Robert Bronleawe Irwin Wessels and Alvin Haugen seek re election against challengers Ada Martin Wabben and Darvin Olson. Polls 12:00 noon to 7:00 pm. locations include Buffalo Center West Side school and Rake Town Hall. Harold Howe also runs at large with little opposition.

September 5 Mail Date for County ASC Ballots

Winnebago County farmers will receive official Agri cultural Stabilization and Conservation Township Committee ballots on September 5. Voters must seal ballots in a plain envelope then place that envelope into a second labeled outer envelope and sign the back to certify personal voting. Ballots counted September 22 with open public inspection. final postmark date is September 16. List of candidates by township is provided.

New Schedule At Library

The Buffalo Center Public Library will start its winter schedule this week with hours on Monday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday hours run from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday is 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday 2:00 to 5:30 p.m. Justice Sullivan Home After Having Eye Surgery Justice Sullivan returned home from Rochester Minnesota August after eye surgery at Methodist Hospital Friends may drop in and see him as he finds time passes slowly.

Rev Bedford to Speak at First Baptist Bible Conference

The Rev James N Bedford D D Moody Bible Institute staff will guest speak at the Bible Conference at First Baptist Church September 7 to 14 with services at 1030 a m and 8 00 p m daily except Saturday His long career includes presidencies at Buffalo Bible Institute London Ontario Bible Institute and theological seminary pastoring in Detroit Cicero Springville and Corning and wartime service directing Ship A Hoy for seamen in Geneva NY He has also served as a conference host and speaker at Canadian Keswick for 17 summers and earned a doctor of divinity from Houghton College in 1952.

Tuberculin Skin Tests to Start in County Schools

The Winnebago County Schools will start the annual tuberculin skin test program on September 8. The test offers participation to students in first and seventh grades, ninth and twelfth grades, and all school personnel, under the guidance of county health nurses Mrs Marjorie Costigan and Mrs Emeline Johnson with RN Mrs Marcia Rugh assisting. The effort has the approval of the Winnebago County Medical Society and is sponsored by the county chapter of the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association.

Paul Carson In England With RAF

Airman First Class Paul Carson left Mason City Airport on Friday morning August 20 to join McGuire AFB New Jersey and then England. He will serve two years with the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at RAF Upper Heyford, stationed abroad. Carson is the son of Mr and Mrs Donald Carson of Buffalo Center. Rites scheduled today for Mrs Henry Baker in Buffalo Center. Funeral at 1 30 pm at First Reformed Church with Rev Henry Vander Schaaf, burial in Olen Mound cemetery. Friendly Club meets Friday September 5 at 2 00 pm at the home of Mrs Keith Hagenson.

Two Men Rob Bricelyn Bank Tuesday Morning

Two men in their 20s robbed the Bricelyn State Bank Tuesday around 11:20 am and fled with about 4000 dollars. Authorities blocked roads and searched the area, noting the getaway car may have been a 1965 red Pontiac station wagon, though unconfirmed. Police radios were inoperative at the time aiding alert delays.

Forest City Concert Association Announces First Seasonal Program

Be On Lookout For Children In Iowa School Zones

Public Safety Commissioner Jack M. Fulton urged motorists to slow to 25 mph in school zones and stay alert for children, bicycles, and pedestrians near schools. He stressed stopping 15 feet from school buses with flashing signals and noted children travel near roadways for nine months. Shelterhouse donations total 2,700 from VFW, American Legion, and others.

Enrollment Drops At Buffalo Center Schools For 1969 70

Buffalo Center Community Schools show a drop of 21 students from 654 last year to 637 for 1969 70. The breakdown lists 328 in elementary, 96 in junior high, and 213 in high school. The twelfth grade has 68 students, kindergarten 35, fifth grade 67, and seventh grade 41.

Miss Eileen Woodcock won a Ford Maverick from Mutual Savings & Loan open house in Mason City after 7,000+ registrations and 10,000 visitors. She declined the prize on August 24 saying she trusts her Rambler instead and is not the Maverick type.

F.F.A. Family Night At Buffalo Center August 25

Nearly 100 people attended the F F A Family Night meeting in the Buffalo Inter Community School lunch room. After the chapter business meeting attendees enjoyed a local F F A film program and a movie showing members products. Mr Nattress described the vocational agriculture program and F F A, presenting medals to state contest winners of the Buffalo Center Bison Chapter. Lunch followed and formal initiation of new members will occur in October.

Bowlers May Secure Equipment at Buffalo Lanes

Local bowlers fear loss of equipment as Buffalo Lanes sits idle this season. Owner Dan Anderson says he will open the alley Friday evening, September 5 from 7:00 to 8:00 to allow bowlers to retrieve their gear. VFW Auxiliary Plans Poppy Day Activities

The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 4824 met at 8 pm September 1 at the Post Home with fifteen members present. Jean Breckunitch won the door prize. A 10th District meeting is set for September 7 in Armstrong. Poppy Day events include mobile pillow cleaning September 16 and family participation September 18 20 with children ages 8-14 selling poppies.
