Army Supply Struggles With Vast Overseas Forces

General Brehon Somervell revealed that 1.5 million vessels carried 40 million tons of cargo in the year ending last June for nearly 5 million U S troops overseas. He warned demands grow as Allied tempo rises, highlighting shortages of heavy artillery munitions trucks tires and tractors. Bond-Fire Club Burns War Bonds at Miami Plant

Twenty seven Consolidated Vultee workers in Miami Florida burned $675 in securities to celebrate victory in war bonds. Men and women participated making the first bond fire club in the United States. Treasury officials say there is no legal prohibition against burning securities.

Resumption of Light Truck Production Boosts Wartime Farm Needs

Production of light trucks will resume in January 1945 after a mid 1942 suspension. Some 30,000 units are planned for the first quarter. The government also raised material allotments to support the transportation system, including 155,000 tons of carbon steel for automotive parts and 507,000 tons for rails, enabling 2,300 bay cars and 105 passenger trains.

British war housing for homeless families to be temporary bungalows

The government will provide snug temporary bungalows for homeless British families left by the German aerial blitz. Each unit will house a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, a bath, and an outside shed with electric or gas heating and hot water. Two thirds of the cost funded by the government, with local authorities covering the rest and managing rents and repairs. Occupancy planned for up to 10 years at $2 weekly plus taxes. Plans stress temporary nature and need for eventual permanent postwar housing.
