Cloudburst at Decorah claims two lives in floods

In northeast Iowa a sudden cloudburst swamped Decorah and nearby towns. Six inches of rain fell in five hours, washing away tracks, bridges, and warehouses. A mother and child drowned, an old man perished, and at Decorah property losses reach about 600000. Rescue efforts continue as more reports of missing persons emerge.

Board of Control Plans $456 Thousand in 1903-04 Improvements

Des Moines May 26 The board of control after a biennial review has approved improvements and extraordinary expenditures totaling 456 677 50 for the period ending July 1 1903. Plans include major works to be funded this year with bids to be invited and contracts let as plans are completed. Excludes Cherokee hospital finishing and fire repairs at Council Bluffs and the deaf school.

Alleged defaulter issued action against ex treasurer Maher

Johnson County Iowa sues ex treasurer Dennis Maher for 1890s misappropriation totaling about 1890 dollars with interest, bondsmen joined. Suit cites conversion and falsified records between 1894 and 1895, undiscovered until 1900. Defense cites statute of limitations. Maher’s bondsmen also parties.

Court Upholds Full Face Value For Building and Loan Stock

Des Moines May 24 The Iowa Supreme Court affirmed that a building and loan association cannot enter contracts with stockholders that fail to honor full face value upon maturity. Elizabeth Field v Eastern Building and Loan Association involved five shares at 75 cents monthly for 78 months, with $100 per share plus 6 percent interest at maturity. Despite $292 paid, the court ruled the association could recover the full $100 per share, rejecting the claim that the face value was merely an estimate and not guaranteed.

Fiery Grave for Miners at Fernie Tragedy

A massive mine explosion at Crow's Nest Coal company in Fernie British Columbia on a Thursday night left over 100 miners dead or trapped with few believed alive. Initial reports put 188 in the mine with 24 believed safe, and causes ranged from an Italian using an open flame to a miner lighting a match igniting gas. Rescue efforts faced dangerous damp coal and potential fires, with hopes fading for casualties still entombed. Authorities in Seattle later cited 130 men present, 20 saved, 110 dead, while noting ventilations improving and no fire indications.
