Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Jack M. Fulton urges vigilant driving for Memorial Day weekend to cut highway deaths. He cites past memorial periods and 47 total deaths over seven years, urging citizens to honor veterans through careful travel and remembrance.
The session in Des Moines produced heavy workloads with over 1,500 bills to scrutinize. Investigations loom into the highway commission and the state department, agriculture, plus merit employment with a five member commission expanding Republican control and potentially threatening merit director Gerald Howell. Lieutenant Governor Roger Jepsen among others weighs in.
Jepsen told newsmen he would have dismissed Howell within a week if he had been governor. The merit system is under fire since its start two years ago for not recognizing longevity pay. Governor Ray's aide William Ball resigns to return to Waterloo law practice, citing work demands. John van der Linden appointed to the state board of public instruction, replacing Warin. others reappointed. Terms run six years from January 2, 1970.
Winnebago County 4-H members leaders and parents attended a training session led by Keith Kimberlin Extension 4-H and Youth Leader for Hancock and Winnebago counties. Attendees include Mrs. Dean Anderson Linien Lassies, Mrs. Kenneth Bruns Eden Farmer ettes, Mrs. Neal Johnson Log anettes, Mrs. Marvin Wessels Buffalo Boosters, Mrs. Robert Thompson Norway Nightengales, Mrs. Alfred Kloppen Norway Nightengales. The program aims to aid personal development recognition teaching others and highlight 4-H work. Miss Elizabeth Clement will assist Hancock Extension this summer with the demonstration program. Senior demonstrations will be July 18 to qualify for State fair entry and all demos will be part of the Junior Show.

Quotas attained are shown for Kossuth county, totaling $230,173 for 37 percent.
Mrs H W Harms was honored Sunday afternoon at the Elman home by a gathering of relatives and friends. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Wm Harms and Roxy, Alfred Yahnke, Fred and Harvey Harms from Forest City, Marian Connelly from Mason City, Loran Kopp and family, Merlyn Elman and family, LeRoy Fisk and family, David Finlayson and Phoenix visitors, Claire Sansguard and daughter from Charles City, and Alta Finlayson with Roger Finlayson at Mason City.

It also notes Buffalo Center’s first step toward a 40000 dollar post office building with an option on five lots at City Park and a planned Ben Franklin store on Main Street run by George Beaving. A Veterans of Foreign Wars warning light at Main and Highway 9 is mentioned along with several long past business transfers from 1939 to 1929 and a barber shop move by Seibert Claassen.
G. K. Lien house, occupied by Prof. C. R. Golly and owned of late by J. F. Johnson of Bancroft, had a consideration of 1000 dollars. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Morgan left last week for Turtle Lake Wisconsin where Mr. Morgan seeks rheumatism treatments.
Monday June 2 offers scalloped potatoes with bologna buttered green beans jelly sandwich cheese slices chocolate pudding and milk. Tuesday June 2 features beefburger French fries catsup pickles peach sauce and milk. Wednesday June 4 serves hamburger patty baked potatoes buttered carrots sandwiches orange whip and chocolate or white milk. Thursday June 5 includes fried chicken whipped potatoes asses salad sandwiches mixed fruit and milk.
Sunday dinner guests and afternoon visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Beavers were Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Beavers and family of Mason City. The men are brothers.
Kathy Teig daughter of Mr and Mrs John Teig will graduate from Mankato State College in Minnesota on June 14 She has signed a contract to teach second grade in the Janesville Minnesota school system this fall
