Miles Morrow a wealthy Mount Pleasant man shot and killed Ben Farrell a Black porter in Smoky Row over alleged abuse of Mary Judson a white woman. Morrow surrendered to a patrolman and was jailed while a coroner's jury ruled Farrell died from a handgun wound inflicted by Morrow.
Osceola breathes a setback as J L Peterson assignee of Mount Ayr bank refuses to appear in Missouri to identify the bank books. The failure to obtain witnesses breaks the chain of evidence and likely leads to dismissal of Dunning wrecking charges and other indictments.
Benton County Auditor pays bounties on twenty six young wolves at two dollars each and one elf wolf at five dollars, part of an annual program to curb wolves along the Cedar river. Webster City reports the death of August Hazeman a well known farmer aged about 60 after his buggy lurched on a hill frightening the horses causing a fall that broke his neck. He was found later by neighbors after the team was seen without a driver. Hazeman was prominent and well to do in the community.
Des Moines grand jury returned seventeen indictments, five against property owners near East With Street and Court for leasing houses for immoral purposes. Four indictments target Harry WLevinh and one targets T. B. Dowden.
Clinton Winfield McKim aged 68 a painter who spent winters in the county poor house was found dead in a barn at Charlotte after leaving the institution for the summer. Death was due to suffocation as he fell face down among a heap of rubbish. No relatives are known.
Triplets born on the 1st to Mr and Mrs Strickler of Conrad. They are all daughters and strong and healthy.
Engineer William Ig hill of Davenport, on Davenport Rock Island Northwestern line, is in St Luke's hospital in critical condition after an extra freight train bumped his engine at Le Claire twelve miles east of here. He was loading water when the collision threw him from the cab against the engine corner, causing severe injuries.
A year-old son of William Hansen was struck by a Central freight locomotive at a crossing and seriously injured. He was playing with other children and ran onto the track as the train approached. the boy was knocked several feet and the pilot struck the side of his head. He probably will not live.

The supposed desperado killed near Willows Monday night after a running clash with pursuing officers has been identified as Count Otto von Waldateln of Buetris.
The British steamer Silverlip, owned by Shell Transport, exploded in benzine aboard during passage through the Bay of Biscay, killing the engineer and four firemen. The Westgate rescued surviving crew members and docked in Plymouth after the blaze burned 70 to 80 feet high. Silverlip, built 1903 at Newcastle, was 470 feet long and 4904 tons net.
In Albany Tuesday night George R. Serugham manager of the international policyholders committee is arrested on conspiracy charges. Charles Stirrup and C. F. Carrington, watchers for policyholders, are arrested in New York on the same charge for allegedly causing counting of defective altered and forged ballots. Jacob Frank an agent for New York Life is arrested on forgery charges in the third degree.
