Des Moines reports Governor Cummins notified by the United States Treasury that the comptroller of the treasury has ruled Iowa is entitled to 456 417.89 dollars for refunding costs incurred to raise volunteers and finance the Civil War. If Congress approves on the Treasury basis Iowa may claim nearly half a million. alternative court of claims figures would yield about 220 699.62 dollars. Policymaking and court actions stir speculation over which path Congress will take. Separately, the Iowa Supreme Court will hear May term arguments on the McFarland case contesting funds withheld during the census department era. In Webster City a cyclone caused extensive damage to farms, buildings, and wires.
May 6 Burlington reports a child named Rosale Schmidt found after forty eight hours of search. Four year old with sunny hair survived a night in tangled brush seven miles west of the city. Parents John and Mrs Schmidt notified.
Waterman's electric line from Winterset to Cres ton shows progress with about two miles graded north from Cres ton. An excavation machine arrived Saturday and will start this week. Officials plan to ask townships along the route for tax aid and petitions are circulating. Constructionlikely to proceed this season.
The body of George Colomaskos, a Greek trader in Perry with partner James Grogaris, was found on the river bank west of town with a fatal head wound. A dog tied to the victim led investigators to the scene. a breech loader gun was found broken nearby. Authorities say murder is clear though motives and culprits remain unknown.
A string of tornadoes struck Learville Bayard Van Wert Hiteman Lebrville and Ottumwa on May 3 to May 6 causing extensive damage. Homes outbuildings schools and depots were demolished damaged or destroyed. Several people were injured including a mother in serious condition and a man named David Harden. Fire in Clinton burned for a month at the Croton Lumber yard causing ongoing smoke and deep ground disturbance.
Governor signed two of three bills under consideration to regulate building investment partnerships and fidelity insurance. The investment bill requires nonincorporated building and loan or tontine firms to post 50,000 in approved securities with the state auditor for investor indemnity or convert to incorporation under building and loan laws. The insurance bill allows stock companies to offer both casualty and fidelity insurance while prohibiting mutual concerns from fidelity operations. A third bill remains pending until May 11.
Newton May 5 coroner jury returns a split verdict after a week in session. Susan Langreen testifies she saw Mrs Levelleur attack her husband with an ax in a barn on fire, while Levelleur denies all. J M Simpson a brakeman on the State Center branch of the Iowa Central was run over at Newbury. One leg off at the hip the other below the knee and one arm below the elbow. He jumped from the pilot to open a switch fell and was run over. He was brought here and will die. James McCullough is conductor.
