Need More R E A Funds In County

Winnebago County residents urge rural electrification supporters to seek extra appropriations. Project Superintendent Glenn Bergland notes Iowa may have only about two and a half million dollars for the next year without new funding, as last year redirected $100 million from WPA and other relief to rural cooperatives. Iowa counties have requests exceeding a half million for REA projects, risking unmet needs without congressional action.

Risius Rerson Dies After Prolonged Illness in Kossuth

Johann Risius died at his home in German township Kossuth county on Saturday afternoon April 22 after weeks of illness following influenza. Born February 13 1867 in Ham sweihrung Germany he migrated to America in 1893. He married Anne Peters in 1894 and lived near Ackley then Iowa Falls before moving to Kossuth in 1902. He was a Ramsey Reformed church member and served as Deacon and Elder. Surviving are his wife seven children Klaus Menno George Joan Harm Frank Andrew one sister three brothers five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted April 25 at Ramsey Reformed Church with burial in the Ramsey church cemetery.

Mrs. Mons Monson was admitted Monday for treatment and dismissed Tuesday. A son weighing 9 pounds 8 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Archie Anderson of Rake on Sunday, April 30. A son named Arvid Myron weighing 8 pounds was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bowers on Sunday, April 30. Mrs. Ben Aulkes and Joyce Mar tlene of Woden were dismissed Sunday. Mrs. Henry Boettcher of Forest City was dismissed Saturday. National Spark Plug Week urges spark plug testing, cleaning, or replacement at Community Oil Company with Champion plugs.

Clean-Up Week Declared in Buffalo Center May 4 to 13

Mayor asks residents to clear yards and alleys and haul trash to the dump west of town. The dump will be open all days of Clean-Up Week. J D Lowe of Algona named to State Conservation Commission by Governor Wilson, six year term through 1945, non salary with per diem for meetings. Lowe, former president of the State Wildlife Federation, lauded for conservation work.

Buffalo Day Set By Buffalo Center Club For August Ten

The Buffalo Center Business Mens' Club voted at a regular meeting to hold Buffalo Day on Thursday August 10 this year. Plans for band entertainment were discussed as funds permit and John Slaba was named to pick a band director. Members also support sending a local boy to Boys State Camp Des Moines in June 1939 and Cancer Control programs.

May Designated As Cancer Month

Acting Mayor J G L Costigan of Buffalo Center Iowa proclaims May as Cancer Control Month urging unity to support the Women’s Field Army of the American Society for the Control of Cancer. He notes thirteen local cancer deaths last year and warns that one in seven over forty may die without action.

CMTC Quota for County Is 6

Six Winnebago County boys may attend the annual CMTC at Fort Des Moines Iowa from July 11 to August 9 at no expense. The camp aims to unite young men under equal conditions to foster citizenship patriotism and Americanism through outdoor life, athletic coaching and training. Charles Davis, a Buffalo Center boy, teaches Knoxville's music program as they sweep sub district ratings. The local Auxiliary met May 1 in the Legion room with Vice President Mrs Iva Claassen in charge and secretary Mrs Leona Haselroth absent. John Lohrbach, mayor of Buffalo Center, suffered a stroke Thursday while in the J. J. Guyer office. He was taken home and remains in precarious condition with little change by press time. Friends in Buffalo Center hope for better news by press time.

Winnebago Rural Chorus to Enter May District Tournament

Winnebago County's rural women's chorus under Mr Odvin Hagen Forest City will perform at the Mason City district chorus tournament on May 17 with Miss Rosalind Cook as critic judge. Each chorus must sing Dear Land of Home Sibelius Manney. 28 singers, mostly rural, have performed 11 times since December 1, practicing four times monthly and maintaining strong attendance.
