National 4-H Club Week Highlighted in Winnebago County

Winnebago County Extension Office announced National 4-H Club Week observance March 6 to 14. Enrollments drive, with 418 youths in 22 clubs, 12 boys clubs and 10 girls clubs, as March enrollment continues. Eisenhower sent a official World Understanding message praising 4-H youth for gaining skills and cooperation.

Return From Sght Seeing Trip

Mr and Mrs Earl Ostrander and Mr and Mrs Jack Liverca return home Friday evening from a two month sight seeing vacation through Texas Mexico California and other points. They visited relatives and friends during much of the trip and arrived just in time to enjoy winter with us. Mr and Mrs Wade Dorenbush of Allen Minnesota were Friday evening visitors in the home of Mr and Mrs Hermie Weaver.

Dave Livingston To Speak at REA Meeting

Dave Livingston known as Iowa's Funny Farmer will headline the Winnebago Rural Electric Cooperative Association and Winnebago Cooperative Telephone Association annual meeting on March 1 at Forest City Auditorium. Sessions for Telephone and Electric members include reports, with four directors to be elected for two years.

Beste Receives Rexall Award for 1953 honor

Mr. Donald F. Beste of Buffalo Center operates the Rexall Drug Store and received a 17 jewel cased watch from Rexall Drug Co. The inscription marks a Golden Anniversary Award for outstanding achievement in 1953. Beste is among the few pharmacists to attain this honor.

Rheumatic Fever Victim Improves at Buffalo Center Hospital

Gary Steinberg ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Avi Steinberg recovering from rheumatic fever since Christmas was able to leave Buffalo Center hospital Friday after a week as patient. He will be confined to bed for several weeks. James Rhode of Keend guests in Rhode home. Mr and Mrs Adair were weekend visitors to the parental home.

School Election Monday in City Hall election set

Filing for school official posts closed Friday noon with two candidates seeking re election. R. T. DeVries Jr. runs for director and E. E. Sapp for treasurer. Election at City Hall Monday Mar 8, polls open 12 noon to 7 p.m.

Business Mens Club Delays Meeting To 7:30 PM

Secretary K. H. Elman says the Business Men's Club dinner and meeting next Monday, March 8, will start at 7:30 p.m. due to the city school election at City Hall with polls closing at 7 p.m. A good attendance is desired.

Schools Receive Transportation Aid in Winnebago County

Public schools in Winnebago county received 30943.71 dollars in state aid for transporting pupils for 1952-53. Buffalo Center's share was 6869.09 dollars and total aid available was 3,000,000 dollars with 3,877,709.33 dollars in claims. Aid was prorated to 77.36 cents per dollar of claim with payments sent to districts including Forest City 7493.66, Lake Mills 5706.39, Lake 2454.44, Scarville 2410.18, Thompson 4379.25, Leland 1399.83, Center Town 14.82, Kiester 216.05.

Carol Heifner Awarded Bronze Star Medal

Carol Heifner a former Army enlistee received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Korea during 1 June to 9 September 1953 as Chief Telephone Installer-Repairman in the 8d Signal Company 3d Infantry Division United States Army. Heinfner’s actions improved wire communications amid harsh weather and terrain and earned praise from headquarters.

Minnesotan Faces OMVI Charge

George H. Martin of Maple Plain Minnesota appeared before Emory J. Oleson on a drunken driving charge. He was bound over to the next term of court with bond set at 750 dollars after his pickup, a 1949 Chevrolet, veered into a ditch northwest of Leland and was recovered by Sheriff Monson Friday.

County Spelling Contest Seeks County Champion

The annual county spelling contest set for March 13 in Forest City court room starts at 1 30 p m. Two Winnebago Men Drafted for March 16 Induction

Winnebago county local board of the Selective Service System says two men from the area will be inducted on March 16. Richard Arnevik of Thompson and Marlin Olson of Lake Mills are named for induction. Five men proceed to Des Moines for armed forces physical exams on March 17, staying overnight and returning the next day.

Snowfall Triggers Skid Crash Damaging Two Cars

Tuesday night a snow slick caused Mrs. Harris Feldick to skid into Ray Hills rear, pushing his car into J. C. Koppes’ lot and narrowly missing a tree. Feldick’s front end suffered heavy damage. Hills’ rear bumper and left fender were dented. No injuries reported.

W Earl Hall to Address Literary Circle March 9

The Ladies Literary Circle hosts a dinner and talk by W Earl Hall managing editor of the Mason City Globe Gazette at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Tuesday March 9. Navy transport General R. L. Hewve docks in Seattle

The Navy transport General R. L. Hewve returned to States and docked at Seattle Saturday with 26 passengers aboard. Among those from Iowa was Sgt. Arnold rerichs of Buffalo Center. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Schmidt and daughters visited the William Schroeder home at Lakota on Sunday.
