Evidence of Rootworm in Winnebago County Fields
County Extension entomologist Gunderson describes methods to detect corn rootworms in Winnebago County fields. Farmers should sample three plants per site, shake soil from roots, and use flotation with salt to identify white threadlike larvae. If 19 or more worms per plant or 50 percent root decay is found, consider soil or in-furrow treatments and note unhatched eggs in the field.
