Iowa OPA raises butter price 11 cents a pound

Authorization for an 11 cent per pound ceiling increase on butter and new first-time ceilings on bulk cream sold for manufacturing was announced in Des Moines. The move aims to boost production, but officials doubt it will quickly add more on the table. They warned the potential removal of ceilings on July 1 could push producers to withhold supplies. Cream ceilings are frozen at the highest May 1 to 15 price. Dairy firms like Buffalo Center creamery and Mason City’s Iowa State Brand Creameries Inc. have halted cream operations, with many dairies shifting to other outlets as the price program pays about 65 cents per pound for butterfat plus a 15 cent subsidy.
