Watershed Projects Advance Across Iowa Since 1964

Watershed projects have progressed rapidly since passage of the 1964 Small Watershed Protection Act, with over 1% of Iowa farmland in some stage of watershed improvement. About 6,000 farmers are applying conservation measures, 14 watershed proposals covering 368,508 acres approved, and 61 watersheds underway or completed. Pilot sites, including Honey Creek and Floyd River, lead regional work as construction expands to 21 watersheds affecting 900,000 acres. The Little Sioux Prevention project involves 4,500 farmer-district operators across seven soil conservation districts, using terracing, contour farming, and runoff controls to protect soil and water. Continuous research in Mendell tracks rainfall, water flow, soil loss, and terrace performance to guide broader programs.

Price Outlook for June Dairy Month Steady

Price outlook for June Dairy Month projects near 1984 levels with small gains in 1965 cash receipts for dairy farmers. Milk production in early 1965 rose slightly. marketings outpaced production due to fewer farms. Production next year expected to be slightly above 1964, with CCC purchases up from 1964. Iowa price shifts hinge on federal market orders, with central prices possibly lowered to avoid losing producers to Wisconsin. Local notices follow about visits and reunions. milk consumption in all forms noted.
